Is it carb or FI?
If carb, they will have to be cleaned.

I would wait to even run it till you have a new tank not leaching through the fuel system.

If FI, run sea foam in tank and let it get into the injectors. Wait till new tank is in place.

If tank was rusty probably have dirty injectors....or at least rust in the fuel rail

That's a good starting point.

pretty much sounds like the rust is wreaking havoc.
Might as well clean the TBs., injectors, new fuel lines, etc.

Might as well sync them while you are there.
, while you are all the way in that deep, check the valves too.
Sounds like a fun Sat. project.

Probably should do new fuel lines. Ill see if i can clean em first..
They are cheap.....buy it by the foot
Ill research syncing tb's.. How much is necessary tool?
Someone probably has one you can borrow
As for valves, do you know if i can just take off the top of the head and there right there?
not the head, the valve covers.
Ill be stupid and ask, so say they are out of spec via shim guage, correct? How do i adjust them?
You replace them, not adjust the shims.

Ill be ordering manual.
You'll need it
Thanks for the ideas and inputs.
These are things that need to be done from time to time, you'll be 60-70% at getting at them with the tank off. Might as well dive right in.

Don't forget to pull and clean up fuel pump.

Evaporust works wonders on rust.

Not gonna lie... buying an 03 for track use is not exactly the best idea. I mean I run my 03 at the track but the 03 was the first second generation and has some kinks that were worked out in the later models... 05+.

The 03's have a problem with twisting off cranks under track loads, not to mention more electrical problems like the green plug I am having trouble with that goes to your ignition and the ground under the tank.

Also, I have problems with it dropping out of 4th back to 3rd and another racer I know had troubles with it dropping from 2nd to Neutral. That can often times be cured with an 05 shift star... from what I hear. Patrick would know alot better than me.

Just things to think about....
