I always thought LEDs looked kinda cool on bikes, considered some on my own. I take it, it is the general consensus that effect lights are tacky? Ugly? I like the glowing rim lights they make too.

Most serious riders look at blingy upgrades as squidly. Chrome rims, rim lights, leds or fur of any kind. Stretched swingarms, unless you actually race, that kind of thing.
They add only poser points but do not enhance the bike.

It's like the guys driving 100,000 pickup trucks, way up in the air, 4x4, custom paint, big tires on chrome rims but you know that truck ain't ever gonna see the dirt. There's no point except to pose.

Ok so what you are saying is that a former cmra number 1 plate holder isn't supposed to like LEDs? And that he isn't a serious rider?
