At least it's not too crazy then if it's only the shift forks. Rebuilt a few 5 speeds out of cars before but this would be a first for bikes so I'm still a little hesitant to split the case until I can rule out all other possibilities.

Which part is the detent cover? I have heard that term while searching but failed to see it in the service manual pages covering this area. The gearshift shaft assembly and all attached components are out and the spring and ratchet parts all seem to interact normal as far as I can tell. Only thing not as expected when taking it apart was that the nut holding the basket/primary drive gear was loose(tighter than hand tight but not by much considering it's 108 ft/lb spec). It will move freely between 5th and 6th but below 5th, something is stuck/bent/blocking it from going further.

That is what my worn shift fork was doing. I couldn't get it down shift past 3rd. It would up shift but not down. It was not exactly stuck. Alan knows his for sure though. He did most of the work on mine.
