Bike stuck in 5th gear, any ideas?

Yesterday i was on my way home, cruising at a constant pace in 6th gear when out of no where my bike popped out of gear. Clicking up to try to go back into 6th would only result in a false neutral. I was able to go down to 5th gear with no issue but it hits a wall after that and won't downshift at all, attempting to go to 6th just acts like missing an upshift, clutch still engages/disengages smoothly.

Took off the sprocket cover and it seems fine on that side and nothing is hitting when i move the shifter to try and go to 4th or 6th, drained the oil and no metal shavings/pieces or anything. Pulled the clutch out and everything looks good as well. Can anyone think of any other easy to check things that i can rule out before having to take apart the transmission? Bike is a 02 gsxr 750 btw and has had no issues with popping out of gear or rough shifting or anything until this.

Same thing happened to me on my KTM. if there is nothing obvious with the linkage check the locking lever retaining bolt, mine had had backed out. Also check the shift shaft spring. Good luck man!

That was the first thing i checked (assuming it's referring to the linkage rod connected to the foot shifter) Took it apart and checked/cleaned it but nothing is loose or contacting any moving parts causing it to not let me go down from 5th.

Me too, or at least something similar. I can't think of anything else that would lock me into one gear like this, but i am hoping if there is something small i find out before i drop the motor and split the case only to find out later it was a 5 minute fix that I never thought of.

If I was you I would call Patrick at Motorcycles Unlimited before I launched into a major repair.
Just see if he has any ideas, I mean, he owns a shop and all, he probably would be able to guess better than most of us.

It is crazy how little wear it takes to effect the forks. My worn shift fork turned into race cut gears and a motor build. lol Good luck. The replacement of the fork only isn't that hard of a job once you get the engine out and split the case.
