Distracted Driver Kills Rider

CORVALLIS, Ore. Investigators say a Corvallis couple was distracted by taking cellphone photos when their van hit and killed a motorcyclist on Highway 99W near Monroe.

The Benton County sheriff's office says Veronica Avila Diaz was driving and her husband Jose Antonio Cejas-Gutierrez had been taking pictures of her just before their van swerved into the oncoming lane.

The crash on Sept. 30 killed 72-year-old Kenneth Douglas Carroll.

The 28-year-old driver was arrested Thursday on manslaughter and reckless driving charges. She was booked into the county jail and remained there Friday in lieu of $97,500 bail.

Her 31-year-old husband is charged with interfering with police and hindering prosecution by suggesting he was driving at the time. He does not have a published telephone number and it's unclear if he has hired a lawyer.

Benton County Undersheriff Scott Jackson said the couple's behavior was "very dangerous."

72 and riding a bike, awesome. Getting killed at that age on a bike, his number was up or bad luck...

Hope the driver gets more than the gal from back home that got 5 years for killing a young lady while painting her nails a few years back.

I saw a dude spill ice tea all over the floor in Subway today because he couldnt put his phone down long enough to operate the tea handle and hold the cup. People need to realize that you dont need a phone attached to you for every single second of the day. Now a guy is dead because some wanted to take a picture......in their van......... WHILE DRIVING

playing while driving needs to be outlawed plain and simple. and a whole new driving program needs to be implemented. and people need to re-learn the rules every so often if a new program cannot be implemented. I would gladly attend.

What's sad is that a whole gallon of finger nail paint wouldn't have helped this woman's look.

BTW, if we follow our own rules on this one, the Wall of Shame thread is gonna die off from no new posts. We judge... but at times we all can be just as guilty.

Big jump between yakking away while riding and posing/taking for pictures while driving a 1.5 ton vehicle.

she only got 18 months of "nights" - free from 6am-9p to work, see her family, etc.

Pretty pathetic

I hope they get what they deserve.

I have a question; since when did driving become the secondary activity when behind the wheel of an automobile?
On my way to and from the shop it seems like all too often I see someone swerving, stopping short, not going when the light is green, running red lights etc. all because they are too busy texting, talking on the phone, eating, applying make up etc.
Many are actually doing two or more of those activities while attempting to drive.

I was behind a girl putting on eye shadow (dont need ur eyes to drive, really) then the light turns green so i politely honk my horn (beep beep!) to let her know its time to drive, and she continues to attempt to drive while applying her makeup so i over-take her...then she tailgates me for a bit...in retrospect i probally shouldnt've overtaken her but still, that kinda stuff enRAGES...

RIP to the rider and those people should get more than 5 years.
Will say though that a number of people here have taken pictures for the wall of shame or other posts (guilty) while driving, but now have to rethink doing that.

Driving has become just too easy and comfortable that no one really pays attention to the act of driving... I remember when the complaint used to be changing the radio station but now it is just so much worse.

Cars keep getting easier and more comfortable that you really have no sensory input to your surroundings or how fast your going.

Need to make people learn to drive with no power assist anything, manual transmitions, and no AC so you have to drive with windows down to get a feel for what's around you. Somthing that requires the drivers participation.

RIP

The cars do a lot more of the driving these days and plus the internet age has us all plugged into the Matrix.

That's why cell phones should go dead other than for incoming calls and voice dialed only outgoing calls at most or perhaps only for 911 calls when the phone is in motion at speeds faster than say 10mph.
