BW8 lane filtering/splitting pics, bumpy ride on lane dividers

Well, some may argue that when I filtered the HOV it is not true lane splitting/filtering. So, to quell the misguided voice I give you this thread and the photos.

We will let Racer X ponder how I manager to cover all the inputs AND take photos while I am riding…

First, I will show you the end. You see there was an accident by the coolent all over the roadway. Such was my suspicion as I know the traffic patterns fairly well. The rest are me splitting. Riding on those white plastic domes, between two rows of cars is not easy.

Anyway & again, this is my form of protest. I think the laws should be changed to allow for exactly what you see me doing here. In just about every other part of the world this is simply knows as riding, not filtering/splitting. If my moto were not water cooled I would do this much more often.

Also, please know I am fully insured both for liability, health and life. If I was to clip a mirror (and I am sure I got very close) I would gladly stop and offer my collision insurance information.

Go fourth, filter & split safely.

Why that’s a mighty intelligent and witty comment, did you think of it all by yourself?

So, go back to your hole, if you don't want to look at the pictures close the thread.

This is for everyone else.

If any pro lane sharing people are interested I have it all in HD video.

Does driving up on the sidewalk to get into a parking lot to cut across a road and back onto the road you were on count as splitting? I would NEVER do that.... (on a semi regular basis...)

splitting has it's tme and place, looks like that was one of them.

for the ? time, i have no prob. w/ splitting if done at the right "occasion"

my main caveat is that riding on the shoulder is NOT splitting.

and i too wish it were legal.

only this guy inthe red truck was a problem. He was swerving all over the place.

Not really much interesting to look at. The important part is I split/filtered for several miles and not once was I honked at, shot or even run over by a road rager.

In fact, many people actually moved over to let me through. AWSOME thank you

I did not pass any other riders.

Had it not been for the white lane deviders and having to ride them, it would have been pure cake.

I would do it again. I percieve the added risk to be fairly small.

Time savings isn't as big a deal for me as the lowering of frustration. That's my 2c.

I've ridden the shoulder in a few situations. My best story was on the 45, I was headed home from Ellington field in full Army uniform (reflective vest included). 3/4 lanes were closed and not wanting to set a bad image, I sat in that line of cages for 40min in the right lane. At that point, a GSX-R1000 cruised past me on the shoulder, I figured I'd waited long enough and my bike was a crisp 212*, so I followed on after him. Less than 30sec later, I check my mirrors and see red and blue flashing behind me. Before I can pull over, I hear via the megaphone, "get out the way!" The Gixxer and I both pulled back into traffic and the copper sped by (still on the shoulder). I looked at the other rider, we both shrugged and got back out of traffic onto the shoulder. Apparently even cops don't care when it's bad enough.

I don't want your insurance policy number because I don't care how nice and polite and responsible you are and even if you have super coverage - I don't want a dammaged mirror or fender or anything else. I don't even want to put up with a close call because I'm frustrated enough as it is when traffic is bad. I also don't want some other person to pull into you because you are an unexpected traffic event that is NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THERE and now there is another accident I gotta wait for so at this point, now I really am off at the a-hole that can't find it in his moral code to obey traffic laws that have been debated to death on this site. You are breaking the law and if you cause me to have to put up with your in 100°+ weather because you tagged a fargin mirror - get the 773H off the road. You can't even obey this simple law, and this is in the same category as stunters and threaders on the roads that give other riders a bad rep. If you want the law changed, do it the right way and not as a single person rebellion. I will back you 100% because I want it legal to split also.
Even though nothing bad has happened to you yet, if you influence another rider, and hopefully not a less experienced rider, to break the law in this manner and it results in negative traffic events, you should think of moving somewhere where it's already legal or stop posting and encouraging illegal activity. This is not CA, Europe or Taiwan. This is Houston. There is a right way and a wrong way to change this law. I would like it changed too, just like the recently changed the left lane law, but it takes time to do it the right way and your riding practices demonstrate that you are short on patients.

Nice to hear you had a good experience w. the cagers. To be honest, the hand wringing about Texas cagers trying to kill lane splitters reminds me of the hysteria when we were trying to get the CHL bill passed in the 90s. "BLOOD IN THE STREETS!! Oh Noes!!!!!"

I did 17,000 miles in CA one year in the 80s, split a LOT, and never had a bad experience. If we ever get it legalized in Tx, I'm planning on putting the new/changed vehicle code # on the back of my topbox as advertisement (and to refer any untrained LEO to the new law!)

To me, bike commuting isn't really about getting to work/home quicker than I could in a car, though that often does happen as a result. First and foremost, it's about enjoying riding my motorbikes more often than I can otherwise, even if it means dealing with the rush hour mess at some points along the route.

I'm lucky the only spot I run into traffic is the BW8/59 connection. The rest is cruising at good speeds. If I have to deal with worst traffic, I may not bother taking the bike. Cus it will no longer be enjoyable. Filtering/splitting cuts into that comfort/fun factor too and just feels too much like work.

Honest Wally. I did. I jumped off the roof 87 times and didn't break anything once. You should jump off the roof too.

Ward, pull over before this fool knocks the mirror off the car! You really believe they were being thoughtful and not getting away from the idiot on the bike? As someone else mentioned, there's the potential collateral damage as well. There with 2 lanes they only have the walls to contend with but on a 3 or more lane one of them surprised and swerving to avoid the idiot on the motorcycle may well swerve into the side of a vehicle on the opposite side.

I'm sure though that you are right and others are wrong. The fact you were only going 15mph or so probably makes all the difference. That semi wouldn't squish you like a bug beneath it's wheels at that slow speed.

Ive Scootered through Rome and some you have probably ridden in Europe.
This behavior is so tame by their standards... I've seen smoking hot, model types in thousand dollar wardrobes ripping the center line at speed! I loved it..It's like you and this gang of scooters own the roads.. Here cagers don't have the same respect or the awareness and that sucks. All that said, I'm a hooligan at heart. after 40 years of riding, ive been down more times than i can count, so I know the risk.. If the situation calls for it I splt.
