TXORR Cedar Creek race weekend

Drove to Bastrop after work Friday evening for the weekends race action, the weather started out great, not too hot, not too cool, just perfect.

Saturday morning, pulled onto the property made the riders meeting, unloaded set up and sent the G/F off for practice. She moved up a class and did very well for her first long course race (she's a new rider, only been riding for 2 months) so I can only be proud of her.

The big bike practice was next, 9.7 or so miles long, a couple long straights through the rocky terrain, some dry rocky creek runs, lots of Cactus, Cedar and over grown rutted up course. We all took off for at least 1 lap, a few of us got turned around on the first lap and ended with a short practice lap, of that few only 2 of us went back out for a 2nd lap to figure out where we went wrong.

The race was up next, not a whole lot of riders but those of us who were there were sure ready to get on the gas. The flag drops and we head for turn 1, about 5 people hitting the first tight turn into the woods at the same time (who is brave enough to brake the hardest and latest, thought I was but I was wrong) I entered the first turn into the woods section in 2nd place, no biggie, we'll only be there for a minute and pop back out to a short straight before entering back into the woods, I settled into 2nd for the time being, eventually I ended up getting around the first place Open C rider and proceed to leave him behind. The course was tight (par for a TXORR event) I kept my head down, eyes up and wanted the win.

About half way through my lap, I run up on and pass a B rider, he falls in behind me, I get to "the spot" and take the wrong turn with the B rider in tow, we end up popping out of the course way too soon and then I realized, "FK, we missed it now what?? "Just go, FK it", so he takes off in front of me, I find a nice passing spot (there weren't many passing places on this tight course) and get around him, take the lead and come into scoring around 10 minutes too soon, I let them know that me and the B rider took the wrong turn again (same turn from practice) I take off for my second lap, wondering where I went the wrong way, I slowed my pace so that I didn't miss it this next lap. Sure enough, I came up on the spot and realized where I went wrong, corrected my direction and put my head down for my next "hopeful" pass.

I stumbled upon a D rider quickly into the last half of my 2nd lap (keep in mind, several riders took the wrong direction) he was not wanting to be too courteous and let me by so I just waited patiently behind him till I found a spot, it wasn't going to be pretty IF that limb crossing two trees was strong, I decided to cut the turn, go between the two trees, close my eyes, pray that was with me and I went WOT, luckily, the limb came with me for a short ride. Now that I'm in front of the D rider, I opened it up and went around through scoring and onto my 3rd lap with 9 minutes left in the race.

Throughout my 3 lap, I was getting winded so I had to remind myself to breath, focus on looking ahead and relax, this allowed me to pick up my pace, catch another lap rider, settled in behind him for a couple miles for a break, caught my wind and wits and then made the pass to go onto win the race in open C class.

Now for Sunday, we have a complete opposite race. after Saturdays race, we head out for well deserved STEAK dinner and a couple drinks then onto the hotel for a nap and wait on a couple friends to have dinner with.

It starts raining while at dinner and I do not have a good feeling about the end result with a 50% chance of rain. Wake up Sunday morning at 6:00 to rain, rain and more rain, fast forward to the race course, our race is flooded so to speak so we wait an extra hour before starting. I singed up for the 2 hr open C race, knowing what I know now, I probably would skipped the whole race today. The mud was everywhere, I had lots of trouble in two areas getting up some slick hill climbs, not that they were big, but you had to be carrying momentum and I just didn't carry that so I got in trouble, wore myself out trying to walk, or should I say motor and push the bike up. I was done, physically spent, I then decided that I am not taking a second lap, I didn't want to tear up my bike, and I sure didn't want to hurt myself in the process..

In the end, Otis graciously cut our course down by around 10 minutes, cutting off the worst portion of our course, most people kept going on to finish a second and a few even completed a 3rd and 4th lap.

Here's a few shots of the aftermath of our mud race. BTW, most of our bikes weighed an extra "estimated" 100# just from the mud, it literally looked like every bike was wearing slick tires, not knobbies.

Thanks for the write up James. Looks like my kiddos keeping me up most of Saturday night ended up doing me a favor. LOL. Sorry I couldn't make it out, but also glad I missed the slop-fest.

thanks for the race report! I can't wait to get back out there with you! It's getting close enough for me to almost start picking out races!

Hope to see you guys soon, I plan to skip this Sunday's Skull Creek race just to recover and relax, I do plan to race the following weekend with TORCS in Halletsville. I am also going to be looking into purchasing a 2013 KTM 200 (it has E-START)

makes me wish I was still out there...sorta. Instead I went playing in the water out on Keller Bay hooking 30" reds....

Didn't have time to do these kinds of things with racing in the schedule. I'll come play from time to time though. Yep!
