Sid's first sprint podium

It took until the second to the last round, but Proud Papa Mr. P is totally stoked that son Sid Shaddock took his first podium finish on his 2007 GSXR 600 at the last race of the day at Eagles Canyon on Sunday.

After piloting our endurance 250 for the first rider stint on our way to 1st overall in Mini Endurance on Saturday, Sid was ready for the big bike rush on Sunday, especially with dry conditions in the forecast. New tires were installed, spirits high off our first team win.

Race 3 and 6 are the usual Superstock B and C Sid runs. Unfortunately, Sunday morning was pouring down rain and I don't have $500 for a set of race rain tires Nancy with the CMRA graciously allowed us to switch Sid to the more competitive Race 18 and 19 for Superbike B and C, the last two races of the day . While we napped in the trailer...3 dudes spooned up on one single air mattress, lol, it dried up outside. By Sid's race there were only a few puddles on the track, and the brand new Bridgestone R10's that John with SCRC recommended worked like magic.

Race 18 Sid missed the start due to a full bellypan of water, and when the green flag dropped he was 1/2 way done with his warm up lap. He managed to work his way up to 7th despite a 40 second head start.

Race 19, starting in the second wave behind the experts, Sid rocketed off from the 5th row and made it to first place by turn 1. He was quickly passed by Grady Sloan in a ballsy move . From there it was a battle in every turn and every straight with the two of them swapping the lead a bunch of times. Sid excels at late braking, Grady at corner exit, so it was a friendly fight to the end. Grady tried to out-corner Sid in the second to last up hill right corner (where he caught him twice earlier in the race) and almost high-sided (nice save). Our new friend Chris Hamlet from WERA was making good time on the dueling pair. But he unfortunately couldn't make up ground in time to get in the mix or it would have been a real cliff hanger. Sid hung on with composure and a level head to safely bring home first...actually catching up to the back of the pack of experts that started a wave ahead of him.

A first place win for a 16 year old in a field of adults and multiple year veterans is an accomplishment. Sure, talent is needed, but what happens behind the scenes is what makes racing such a character-building endeavor. Sid is prepping his bike, putting on the warmers, wrenching, taking it to tech, warming up to potential sponsors, asking and following veteran advice, checking fluids, loading and unloading trailers and bikes and gear and boots and on and on and on. If you can't handle your business, you probably will have a hard time handling CMRA. Racing is a crash course in successful business planning, execution, time management, team motivation, leadership, and most important: self-reliance. As I take a less hands-on approach as the season continues, Sid surprises me with knowledge, aptitude, and motivation that I didn't see in him a year ago. I see a day soon when he moves on to college and beyond. These experiences will let him thrive on his own. Thanks CMRA.
