So, shooting a person in the head is an easier shot than shooting a tire/wheel?

Are you reading the same thread? Of course I recommend NOT shooting them. Shooting at ANY small highly mobile target in a self defense situation is stupid on a good day. There's a reason nobody except supercops like Jesse is ever taught to shoot for tires, hands, arms or legs. Its a good way to miss.

What I'm trying to get across is some IT guy who sits behind a computer for a living (not the job, my brother in law and many friends make good money doing it), should not be commenting on law enforcement as if he's a 20 year veteran.

I merely stated that shooting at tires does indeed happen and I even pointed out a situation that it was effective in ending the pursuit. Come on, if you're going to come in and say nobody shoots out tires in real life, just in hollywood bla bla bla you better damned well be sure about it and not expect cop on a motorcycle forum to say otherwise.

I'm not on any cop forums. Feel free to sign up at one at make your bold statement and see if you get any support on the fact that cops don't shoot out tires and they rarely ever unholster in the line of duty and see how that goes.

I think I'm going to join an IT forum and say floppy discs are the best form of media storage ever!

Difference between me and you is, I can carry on a conversation in detail outside my field without having to resort to a false appeal to authority to support my position. I'm sorry you think that because I do not carry a badge for a living that I don't know what I'm talking about. It doesn't make you automatically right and me automatically wrong.

Seems to me you're pretty damned insecure about yourself and have a need to puff up your self worth by denigrating those who disagree with you and attempt (poorly) to nitpick a statement to death to support your position. If that makes you feel superior, hey, enjoy it.

I, on the other hand, am having a lot of fun watching you basically say "I'm a cop and you're an idiot, because I say so" and think that passes for rational discussion.

Have a nice day Jesse. Stick to what you know. Obviously intellectual debate is not on the list.

No - the rule of being certain of your target and what is beyond it. You have no way of knowing exactly where that bullet will go when you miss.

So, just to be clear, you think he is saying "I'm a cop and you're an idiot," while you are in essence saying, "I took a gun safety course one time, and you're an idiot"?

To be clear, he's saying "I'm a cop, you're an idiot" and I'm in essence saying "Its stupid to shoot at the tire of a moving car when there are MUCH better ways to stop it".

Have I said it CANNOT be done? Of course not. Anything is possible. Is it the smartest idea in the world? Only a fool would say it is.

Are you implying it is a common and recommended practice?

The fact that you're trying SO hard, to prove your point on an internet forum, loses your credibility. Just saying.

I only joined the party when you said it doesn't happen.

shooting at tires...I would not suggest doing so unless the circumstances were very favorable... could it done, straight.. under the right conditions, are there times that you would not do it... yes...
I think the Popo on here is correct, but at the same time I also understand that a good percentage of the time it would not be a wise thing to do... I think the circumstance would dictate if the shot should be taken...
there is not a black and white rule that says not to... with any shot what will happen if you miss is a consideration...
but my position the subject the op gave us is, popo should do the chase...

I did some searching. They say its not recommended to shoot out a tire. But there is a bunch of cases where it worked.

This thead went from should cops chase a runner to should cops shoot at a runner. WOW I would say yeah chase if its safe but I dont think its safe to be shooting at anyting durring a high speed chase. A lot of LEO (excluding SWAT or tac teams) rarely use (at work or privately) their side arm and ,considering shooting is a perishable skillset they are most likely just gonna be sending bullets flying around anyways. And since running from the popo is a realitivly miniscule fellony, and at this time is NOT punishable by DEATH. I think the gun should stay holstered always when chasing, and spikes stay in the trunk when chasing a motorcycle.
