dirt bike question

I'm looking at a 98 Yamaha yz 250 , first gear in the trans is out. I was wondering how expensive this would be to fix parts wise?

http://www.surdykeyamaha.com/

When the local guys have to order my OEM parts, I've been using the above site for parts. The price has been lower and shipping is free after $25.

You should be able to get your price for parts there.

You could get a close estimate by using this yamaha parts finder to identify the parts and possible gaskets, etc that you might need.

You are going to end up with a box full of parts and no bike. Missing nuts and bolts.

Could be lots of reasons it is hard to start, ticking is bad and oil is spooge. The gas is premixed with oil.

I enjoy tearing into a thumper.

While you are there, might as well bore out the top end too. Head work....new FMF. Make it a YZ325

BTW, you'll need a new case gasket, probably a new cover gaskets too. Might as well get those. Pay close attention to the shift drum while you have it out. Anything more shiney than the other parts, inspect real good

hard to start is probably a clogged idle jet. It can be due to low compression (ie- needs a new topend), but is most likely is due to a clogged or partially clogged idle jet.

Spooge out of the headpipe and/or silencer is poor jetting. When a 2t bike doesn't get a good clean burn it will cause unspent fuel/oil to ooze out of the exhaust. If it only comes out of the headpipe, but not out of the silencer, then it might just need a new gasket/o-ring where the header meets the motor to make a better seal. Also, it is very common for 2t pipes to get tweaked during crashes and the headpipe no longer fits correctly to the motor.
