Any advice?
I would suggest some light-duty ear plugs and wear your gear. Sort of insulates your senses so you can focus.

I definitely feel much more comfortable in full gear. Haven't tried the earplugs.

i have been riding since 1963 and i have to admit that to this day i am not nearly as comfortable on freeways around town and i am out on the open road...i always have it in the back of my mind that every car out there is just looking for their opportunity to take me out...i ride defensively...

Always give yourself a way out, and ride in the drivers mirrors at all times.

Earplugs, definitely, and of course gear.

Besides that, venture out early Sunday morning when traffic's really light, that helps you warm up to the environment as well.

I was freaked out by the freeway initially but very quickly realized it is probably safer due to the lack of intersections. What I did was to get up early on weekends and ride before there was any traffic.

I didn't realize this was an issue for so many people. A buddy of mine has had his bike for awhile now and keeps missing out on rides because he refuses to ride on the freeway. To the OP, you have some cojones for making that commute so soon.

Scariest part about riding on the freeways is all the that people drop on them when they move! Look out for couches, mattresses, chairs, etc. It's normal to feel apprehensive at first. Remember back when you started driving a car and the first time you got on the freeway. It was scary at first and now it's nothing; well on your bike it is the same thing.

+100 on earplugs. The reasons mentioned above are great and apply in this case, but the main reason is to protect your hearing. Hearing loss is accumulative and once it is gone, it is gone for good. Bike riding at speed is LOUD, even with full face helmet. Some worse than others.

Put those earplugs on.
