I've seen bigger on smaller bikes, another good choice can be a Kawi 650 the new ones are sexy or an .sv650

Another good choice is the Kawi 500. It's got twice the power, but it is still tame enough for a beginner and has not left me bored. I'm 6'-0", 185 lbs.

I've been riding just shy of a year, and I think it's a great bike. It was an easy transition, and it doesn't have too much power to get you into trouble. Granted, I've made 2 mistakes on mine, but they were learning pains, I guess.

First time, I was going about 45 around a curve, and I hit some gravel when I took the turn wide. Slid into the grass, messed up a stator cover. Replaced myself for $30.

Second time, I was at the track at MSR and I went into the grass when a guy in front of me fell. Broke a fairing, and fixed the couple issues I had from the fall (ie: shift lever).

It's cheap, easy to fix and repair, very reliable, and gets 65 mpg.

The only complaint I have, which you will have with the Ninja 250 or any other small bike, is that on long travels it gets cramped. I installed a Zero Gravity Touring windscreen, and at full tuck I still got a lot of buffeting at cruising speeds of 65-75 mph. Getting a full blast of wind to the chest gets tiring. It is also a light bike, and stronger crosswinds will throw off your balance or just become a nuisance.

Keep in mind that displacement is not a big deal though. It still takes a lot of practice and experience to lean and corner a bike, and for daily commuting is more than sufficient for your needs.

x2 on the SV! Love the twin. It's quite a bit more forgiving as it has more torque in the low/mid rpm range. I ride an older TL1000s as a brand new rider and haven't had any issues. Had I not gotten such an awesome bro-deal on the 1000, I would have started smaller. I'm 6'2"/300 lbs.
