Black Face parties

It would seem that every year around this time, we see an increase in "Black Face" parties or atleast in the reporting thereof. I assume the reason being is the impending celebration of Black History month in February. What, in your opinion is the reason behind not only the conducting of these parties in the first place, but, why within the scope of these parties, we can observe some of the most vulgar stereotypes being portrayed? Racism? Social Ignorance? etc...Also, do you all think it is wrong to infact conduct these parties? What do you think should be the punishment, if you do indeed believe there should be punitive action taken?

Here are a few articles that relate to the latter statements:

And when I say "punitive action", I am referring to those who throw these parties while attending college...What should the colleges do ?

...I don't like 'em! Considering the history of Blackface and how it was used to denegrate blacks since the late 1700's, I can't imagine ever attending a Blackface themed party and were I to have friends that planned on going, I would let them know where we stand currently and where we would stand post facto. Regardless of who is throwing it and how they supposedly feel about blacks, it has a bit of a racial undercurrent.

Good topic Cajun. I think that if it is a Fraternity/Sorority throwing the party as is the case most times then the University should put the them on probation with the possibility of losing charter for further infractions. I'm intersted in seeing some of the responses on this one.

Preciate it! Yeah thats exactly why I started it. Curious as to the kind of responses I'll get on this one. I agree with the idea that they should be presented with a probationary period and the threat of losing their charter as well. How about with those who are simply students?

go back and read my edited post and answer that question, its pretty close to yours just not a blackface party. i see your point but what if there where black or african americans members of the fraternity and attended the party. would that make a difference? my friends and i are very diverse, a couple black a couple white, a couple venezuelan a couple guatamalin a couple asain a couple indian we dont care what color or race you are, if you hang around us you'll notice that we make fun of everybody equally

I had no idea people did this. my boss told me stories of him in elementary school putting on minstrel shows. It was the teachers that organized it.

I'll show this to my boss in a minute and i bet he wont even care. It's just how some people are raised. I bet most of those people aren't even prejudice. It's disrespectful for sure.

I would have gone to the party and brought some MiLK for MLK day.

It is one thing to make fun of a race of people and do it equally amongst all races, however, it is different when considering the history of blackface and how deep those wounds go within the black community. Hawaiians(sp?) for example did not have a history of being patronized by their white counterparts.

I would be willing to acquiesce to this point...

I can see the prejudice in the party, I don't think what they are doing is right. I guess it would be different if it was a joint party like what romeo36 said. I still wouldn't go. So how does everyone feel when you see people like that on the street trying to look and act like they are from the hood or ghetto, but you know dang straight they never have the cojones to back it up

got one word for ya.... IGNORANCE.

That's all it is man... a bunch of retards actin' like fools simply because it does not offend them. (oblivious to what they are really doing.)

"...forgive them lord, for they know not what they do."

most of our problems in society come from ignorance and naivety.

now..... pardon me for my following question:

What the F#CK is the point of dressing up like that for a party? If you want to celebrate,... tip that and chug it! But I don't see how you can dress up, and "...not mean anything by it." Am I missing something here?

I can't say if they were being racist or not, but it definitely raises the question of how patronizing are you being when you do these things?

I would disagree with that part of your statement, other than that I would agree that a party like that is disgusting and should not be allowed to happen, and sanctions at the very least after the fact.

Very true. It is ignorant to have these parties whether you are actually racist or are simply ignorant of how condecending such a thing could be due to the history associated with this topic. It also looks pretty foolish as my papa would say, so I can't see the point to doing it other than being malicious by intent or 'following the crowd"...
