Oil change intervals???

Alright guys,
I just wanted to know how long you guys wait between oil changes?

On my 636, i changed my oil myself with just regular kawi oil at 450 miles to get the trash out of the motor from being brand new. I was told to wait a little longer before switching to synthetic to make sure the motor was good and broke in. I waited till 500+ before i considered my break in complete and began riding it a little harder like i wanted to but still had the regular kawi oil in it. I then changed my oil at 2500 miles to Motul Synthetic. I had Patrick at Motorcycles Unlimited do it because i had my bike up there having some other work done to it as well and he had a bad price on his oil change special. Now i only have 2908 miles on it so i got awhile before i gotta change it again.

Ok, now my whole point of making this post is because i spoke to a buddy of mine that said he changed his oil for the first time at 300 miles and every 800 after that. His bike has almost 4000 on it now.

Now that just seems a little overkill to me. Im running synthetic and im going to change mine at every 2000 which i figured was more than excellent care for the bike since they say you can go 3000-5000 a change. I just like taking good care of my stuff but changing it at every 800 miles is seems a little crazy.

What do you guys think?

LMK! Thanks!!

I would say it depends on how you ride and if you do track days. Give Pat a call and inquire with him based on your riding style.

800 seems a little crazy unless all he does is track days.

i been told to change my oil every 2500 miles.

I go about 4000 if I did it at 800 that would be like 11/2 week some times
and that would be crazy

Ok ok, ill ask Patrick but i just wanted to hear how often yall change yours. Im thinking every 2000 miles using sythetic is more than good enough. Ive just never heard anyone else say they change theirs every 800. He doesnt ride the track at all as far as i know.

800 Sounds rediculous. I do mine after every track day. Which was about once a month. Regardless of mileage. When I did not ride the track it was about every 2500.

Ok cool, that sounds about right to me.

I wanna start running track days. If i like it, i might turn my bike into an all out track bike and take it off the street. It looks like alot of fun and there is no cops out there to watch out for! lol

do you have an owners manual if not get someone to lend you one. The people that have designed the bike are hard to beat as far as knowing the right time to change your oil. The other thing to do if you don't trust them is send a sample off.

Runnin motul semi-syn 10-40 and change it every 2500-3000 miles. 800 miles seems excessive for street use IMO, but every bike is different. Change it as often as you can afford and consider it cheap insurance.

With today's great oils that are available, and a good oil filter, changing your oil less than 2500-3K miles is throwing your money in the trash...

my uncle has a 97 goldwing with 97000 miles on it. He changes the oil every 2500 miles as do I.

You may also want to reconsider if you need to run a full synthetic.
