Lane splitting?

Give me your thoughts on lane splitting. Is it legal? And if so provide evidence.

I do it, sometimes in heavy traffic, or at stop lights.

Is it legal? No, and neither is half the other things I do

It's been discussed numerous times and no not legal. Law doesn't specifically state "lane splitting" but as I recall, no two vehicles can occupy one lane ....or something to that extent.

At some point it turns into a real good way to test your gear out - assuming you are wearing any.

Seriously have you seen the way idiots drive in this city and you want to share a lane with them.

3 seconds with google...

19. Can I ride my motorcycle between cars in traffic?

The law doesn't specifically say one way or the other, but there are several statutes that may come to bear depending upon the circumstances, i.e. right of way, obligation to drive in a single lane, signal intention, passing with safety, etc. Motorcycles are considered equally as cars regarding traffic laws, so the single lane, signal intention and other statutes in the Transportation Code could come in to play.

The main statute that makes "lane splitting" illegal is Transportation Code Section 545.060, entitled "Driving on Roadway Laned for Traffic."

An operator on a roadway divided into two or more clearly marked lanes for traffic: shall drive as nearly practical entirely within a single lane; and
may not move from the lane unless that movement can be made safely.

Legal only in California. Do it at your own risk.

Done it several times when I lived in Cali. Cagers there don't even know it's legal and try to block your way. Can't imagine trying it here.

I only do it if I get separated from a group at a red light, most cagers see that and understand. Otherwise, the risk of someone off is too great for me..
