Ethanol - Response from Washington

Don't know how many of you are AMA members, but we were recently prompted to contact our representatives, regarding the EPA and the increasing Ethanol, in our fuel. I have had my vintage fiberglass tanks damaged, as well as plastic tanks, on modern bikes. At any rate, I contacted several of our state reps, and recently received this response, from Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison...

Quote:
Dear Friend:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the decision by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to increase the amount of ethanol blended with gasoline. I welcome your thoughts and comments.

In 2011, the EPA approved an increase from 10 percent to 15 percent ethanol blend (known as "E15") for cars and light trucks after the model year 2000. E15 is currently barred from use in light equipment and vehicles built prior to 2000. Despite credible concerns from food producers, auto manufacturers and oil refiners that the American consumer could be physically and/or economically harmed by an increase from E10 to E15, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit recently dismissed a legal challenge to the EPA's planned expansion of ethanol use to light equipment and vehicles.

Many concerns about the ethanol blend mandate have emerged. Coupled with the devastating drought in corn-producing areas, I am troubled by the possible magnitude of the higher food and fuel prices in coming months that will be driven by corn crop failure. In addition, there remain unresolved concerns about the effects of E15 on smaller motors. Unless risks of engine damage are fully understood, consumers could be stuck with hefty repair bills, affected industries could be damaged, and serious consumer safety issues could arise.

I believe that it would be irresponsible for the EPA to impose its expanded ethanol mandate without fully understanding its impacts. Although such legislation would seem to have little chance of passing the Senate, please be assured that I support legislative action, legal appeal, or EPA policy reversal in order to head off the impending E15 mandate.

I appreciate hearing from you, and I hope that you will not hesitate to contact me on any issue that is important to you.

Sincerely,
Kay Bailey Hutchison
United States Senator

Good news IMO. I am not now, and never have been, a fan of ethanol in our fuels on a mandatory basis.

On a forum like this you're preaching from the pulpit.

I suppose that the optional E85 isn't doing it for agri business (and their powerful lobby)? The last I read is that if E15 is offered it will be in segragated pumps with clear labels and warnings and sold alongside E10 and not made mandatory, at least for now.

Most established gas stations aren't going to switch until if and when the fuel becomes mandatory and replaces E10 as it's a very expensive process, but future gas stations can and might provision for the selection.

I have an AFR meter in my toy car and the current tank, from the time I filled up has shown that I'm running leaner than usual, by a fair amount. I can only guess that the fuel had the maximum of 10% ethanol mixed in (would've expected to see this in the past) or by accident the maximum percentage was exceeded. I'll find out for sure with the next fill.

I think it's a bad idea to use food as fuel. If the drought continues it could be disasterous. Remember the dust bowl lasted for YEARS.
If we had moved further down the road of ethanol fuel, like Brazil, and then a drought came along we would have been screwed. Until there is a suitable substitute for oil we have to keep using it.
Maybe a little ethanol to stretch the available oil isn't a bad thing but pushing the percentage higher will be.
My other concern is that even though they add ethanol, which reduces our gas mileage and is cheaper than gasoline, the price at the pump doesn't reflect the savings.

Props to the AMA for fighting this, I know boat owners are working on it too.
And props to Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison!

The national average price of a gallon of gas jumped almost five cents Wednesday to $3.80, the highest ever for this date. Enjoy

I use a fuel stabilizer called Starbrite-Startron that actually eats the ethanol inside the ful tank. As soon as I am done with a ride I put a cap-full in my tank. Don't really feel like buying a new tank anytime soon.

You know what's even better than that?

Back in the olden days, we didn't have to put in our tanks to stabilze the they put in our gas!
You could park a bike for a couple months and when you came back to it...

it would start. Spooky huh?

The reason you got a response is because Gov. Perry and a tirade of other Governors are pushing the epa to ease certain regulations (more than just ethanol)

I do not have the links at this moment but im sure a google search will pull up the article i was reading that not only showed that ethanol is a horrible additive to fuel (when compared to the energy per gallon) but also that it is a self-defeating process..more oil is wasted harvesting the corn to be used in a fuel that is less powerful. i wish i had the link because it was a very sobering read.

+1
Thats the reason for corn subsidies. The farmers can't make a profit or the margin is too slim so the gubment pays them to grow corn for fuel.

It would be downright stupid to mandate more ethanol in our fuel during this upcoming food crisis.

Food prices are about to skyrocket and many are about to starve. To death.
