290 HOV Lane has DOUBLED in riders (most illegaly w/ only 1 occupant)

Guys, I didnt want to post this at first but since the End of May I have noticed the steady rise in sheer number of cars using the 290 HOV lane in the mornings and on top of that most have only 1 person in the car.

This is egregious, and to me an outrage because now, they speed up so that they're doing JUST the speed limit of the cars outside the HOV lane, and theres no point to even frickin driving on it anymore...

Anyone else notice this? Wish I could report these crooks, maybe a GoPro on the helmet would provide all the evidence C.O.H needs to prosecute.

I see it every day on the ride to work and sometimes count more than half of cars with just one person. Dosent really effect me though since I ride the oposite direction of the hov every day

It's always funny to see them pulled over by HPD when they get to the down town exit. Too bad they don't patrol it often enough.

If you have an EZ tag now you can ride on the HOV being just one person but it will charge your account. Im not sure for 290 but for 45 HOV and 59 HOV they are doing that now.

Ryuu: thats the problem there are entrances and exits that are un-watched and also dont have "Gates" so people are free to enter/exit the HOV in certain points without being inspected to make sure they have the required number of passengers.

Sherron: Not on the 290 HOV.

What me off more about the 290 HOV up by Cypress is the way people cut in and out of it like its a passing lane. They totally ignore the double white line, I swear I almost see a wreck everyday due to that

Yeah, the one on 59 is now a toll/hov lane and since making it toll accessible they've added cameras but i think 290 is strictly HOV, no toll allowed.

59 never had cameras before the recent rollout and i never saw it as a big problem but did occasionally see it. Would always enjoy seeing police checkpoints to catch people though.

Here's what me off:

The existence of HOV lanes.

You could shove 2 inbound and 2 outbound lanes in the space of the shoulders and HOV itself in most cases. But, as is usual, money spent to change behavior from the naturally self-interested norm is usually not money well spent.

And making folks pay $ to use HOV lanes is just another form of taxation of the rich and repression of the free will of the poor, lol.

Just wait until every major river crossing becomes a toll road and the banks of each river are all private property. Not so great for the po folks.

my HOV is now also a toll road, and a single person can take it for $4.50

Maybe that is what you are seeing.

then there's the debris and rocks that tires pick up when they cross over that gap between HOV and main lanes (b/t Mason and HW6)

Had some guy that did that in front of me and chipped my windshield.

Havn't been on 290 in a while, is there a wall that seperates HOV from mainlanes?

You think the rich have a problem paying extra to speed up their commute?

ALL of you and moaning about the 1 occupant HOV riders everyone else off on the roadways as you're speeding and weaving through traffic on your bikes, why the hypocrisy huh?

IF you chose to ride alone and get caught, well, pay the fine that you get..

IF you get a speeding ticket on your bikes, pay the fine.

same thing IMO. either/both ways, it's all the same..

I use to live off 290 and ride my bike down the HOV lane everyday. Entrance near west road. But i saw 50%+ of the people on there is only 1 person. The only place they have cops busting people is at the very end station where you can go to old katy road or to I-10 HOV lane. So all the 1 passengers exit right before it and never get caught. I GOT OFF AND FED UP with it, i started calling the cops on people. They didn't give a , So i moved off of I-10 and now my drive is a breeze. LOL

But FYI most 1 passenger are willing to risk the $75 non-license point ticket. I had to ride all the way to the end then merged on i-10. I use to see the cops busting people all morning there. But see SOOOOO many get by while that cop takes an hour to write the ticket

Plus the cops are racist. >90% of the people I've seen them pull over aren't whities.
