Can someone explain the point of "tear offs?"

I see them on racing helmets, but what do they do? I see no purpose of having a clear strip over your visor.

i believe they are for racing. If you get something on your faceshield like dirt or water you tear off a layer and you can see again.

Mainly used for dirt racing but can also be useful on concrete. Get a bug splatter, mud, blood, grease, birdshit or anything else in your field of vision and it's hard to win a race.

Go fast enough behind other riders on track (and some "back roads riding), you'll see why you might want tear offs!!

Seems like it would be hard to tear them off with gloves on especially of racing around a track.

Look at their helmets when they do close ups on TV races. There is a big flap on the side making it pretty easy to grab the tear off while going down straights.

When I watched the MotoGP and Moto2 races today I looked to see if anyone pulled them off but didn't, but now I see how they work.

Yea, you won't see it too often, actually watch them pull one off. I've seen the riders typically pull it off after warm up lap right before race. Occasionally you'll see riders pull one off middle of a race, or towards the end.

I see them get torn off during races pretty frequently. It can be hard to see on the move if you're not expecting it as it looks like not much more than a hand wave and maybe a flash as the plastic flutters away. You'll see F1 drivers doing it too. They're a little easier to see as they have to toss them out to the side so it doesn't get sucked into the intake above their helmet.

Which makes me wonder if they ever get sucked into inlets or over radiators. But I suspect being the clingy film that they are, they probably quickly stick to themselves and ball up.

They are really useful for bugs on a weekend ride. Of course you could just take the time to clean your visor at each fuel stop.
