Thoughts?

I've been contemplating getting a tard for awhile now, but the frequency of motors going ka-blooey makes me nervous. I don't want something I have to rebuild/replace every year (or more often). Does one make/model hold up better than the rest, and are there any that are just ticking timebombs?

I've wanted to get into track riding for awhile and I think a 'tard would be a better choice for me than a sport bike. While its primary use would be track, I would like something that would also be useful on the street.

I found this guy north of Houston. Whatcha think? Run, hide or buy it?

What's up Pinball!!!

I'm no expert in the Tards, but my Dual Purpose has 47,000 miles on it with no top end yet, and its a 225.

From what ive heard the LC4 engine is the way to go!

You know that bike is still a Dual Purpose and not a tard yet!

DRZ400SM is bulletproof. Underpowered, but bulletproof.

Yep. I know it's not there yet, but it's already street legal and it's priced right (for me).

I'm guessing the fix(es) for being underpowered makes it not so bulletproof?

Once you've decided what kind of riding you plan to do, that should help narrow down what bikes to choose from.

The DRZ400 sm and the WR250x are bulletproof bikes but they lack power for most people. BUT, you won't have to sit and do frequent valve checks, top ends, etc. Fun bikes with very little to worry about. Built to put mileage on. My first streetbike was a wr250x. I loved that bike but it was just a little underpowered for my taste.

Another popular tard option (what i'm doing right now) is to find a nice crf450x or a wr450 and do a supermoto conversion. They have tons of hooligan power without as much high maintenance as a full on 450 MX bike converted. Valve checks are less frequent as well as top ends. They also come with wide ration transmissions better suited for street riding. Also come with larger radiators compared to their MX big brothers.

The lc4 is a great bike. I have a 2001 640 supermoto and had a 2000 640 supermoto as well, but just sold it. They are bulletproof and will spank anything else for the price. I'm not trying to step I'm any toes here, but the lc4 is on another level compared to the drz400. I've ridden multiple drzs and lc4s. I wouldn't pay 2800 for a non supermoto version in my opinion. You can find one for that price with the sm wheels on it already. I'd sell mine for that price to you, but I love it way too much. And this is coming from a bike .

Thanks for the info, guys. It definitely helps.

The primary purpose of a SM for me would be track days (not racing) and occasional street use. I have a nice, comfy street bike already but would like to mix it up occasionally.

Looks like for the bike in the CL link I posted, wheel options are pretty slim. I can either use the stock hub, find a rim and have it laced, buy an LC4 SM wheel for around $500 or go through the hassle of Frankensteining CBR250/900RR rims on it.

Guess I'm going to have to be patient. The info here will definitely help keep me from jumping the gun.

There's also a wealth of info on supermotojunkie. Wouldn't hurt to do some research there as well to help educate yourself. I learned ALOT there reading up on threads for a few weeks.

I think you made the right decision. I absolutely love my lc4, but I use it as a streetbike. I wouldn't choose it as a platform to do trackdays on. I'd get a 530 exc or similar for that.

The 625 SMC/SXC are lighter and run a little harder than the 640. They are all bulletproof. Look for a SMC or an already converted SXC.

I loved my DRZ!! I also spent a ton of money on it to make it handle, stop and as fast as the KTMs or converted MX tards and it was still a ....It was still fast as though. I also think a DRZ is a really good entry level tard and will do everything you want it to do. I have my next tard build set on a WR450 but it wont be until next year probably. From what these old farts say about thier KTMs is true...fast, handle and already have brembo brakes. Try thumper talk and Supermotojunkie like suggested above...
