Hill Country Riders - Need Advice

So it looks like I'll be finally taking a hill country ride some time soon and I need some help planning a route. I'm planning to leave Houston on Friday and stay in New Branfels or San Marcos (so the wife can shop while I ride) and return mid-day on Sunday. Is Highway 46 to 16 a good option to bypass San Antonio and get to the three sisters quicker? From there I plan to ride 335, 336 & 337 and take 39 back to Kerrville on Saturday, then ride somewhere around Austin on Sunday.

Any advice? Oh yeah, and who wants to go??

Man, that's quite a trek to get to the Sisters...we always try to stay close...

I'd suggest taking 16 back to Kerrville instead of 39.

From our last trip, one thing I would have done differently was turn around on 336 after all the twistes. Then ride back into Leakey, hit 337 to Camp Wood, then 55 to 335, turn around when you get to 41, take a break under the shade tree, and head back the same way you came. Going that route helps to eliminate straightaways...but you must have time in your day to do the route like that b/c it takes longer than just doing a 336>41>335>55>337 LOOP.

How soon are you going? Exact dates yet?

I was originally planning a one-day trip from Houston (about 800 miles) but I came to my senses.

Not worth it at all IMO. I think if you're gonna go out there, stay a few days. You'd be miserable if you rode an R6 that far in one day!

Best plan is to trailer up there on a Thursday night or Friday morning. Ride Fri, Sat, half day Sun, pack up and head back home. That will be plenty of riding for one weekend and you only have to take off Friday to pull it off (assuming you don't work weekends)

I've been out there 5x over the past few years, I'm always down to go if I can...

When I went earlier this year we stayed in Kerrville. We took 1604 to blow around San Antonio.

From Kerrville, we hopped up to 41 and took that to the Sisters, rode the loop and back out 41. It's a fast route to get there, but not as scenic. Still we got 100 miles of scenic sisters, so we didn't care. The ride from Kerrville to the sisters is about 45 minutes if you're not afraid to fracture a law or two. That route also puts your mid-run stop at Camp Wood or Leakey, which just works out right.
