Exclamation Cautionary tale: wear your helmet

After reading the last couple of Rider Down reports, where the rider had what seems to be an accident that is survivable but dies from "massive head injuries", I thought I would share a story from my past. Note: wearing a helmet is no guarantee that you will survive any given situation, but I think most people agree, it increases your chances greatly. I walked away from an accident that would have likely cracked my skull open, simply by wearing a helmet.

Years ago I owned a Suzuki Madura, a bike I spent a lot of time riding and enjoying.

After leaving a stop light, I was hit from behind at ~35 mph by a speeding Chevy Camaro. I estimate he had been doing about 60 when approaching the intersection where I was sitting at a red light. I guess he assumed since the light had turned green, there was no need for him to slow down. The impact threw me over the bars and I hit the ground some 15~20 feet ahead of the bike. The car was wedged between the bike's wheel and seat frame, which was torn apart in several places (it looks like an ejection seat ).

.

After I landed, honest to , I got up, removed my helmet and smashed it into his windshield (had to prepare him for the obligatory information exchange ). Yeah, I was pretty . Unfortunately, there was no way to tell later if the helmet had suffered its damage from the fall or the windshield, but let's assume it helped me avoid death. I'm sure it did.

Of course, he had no insurance. I still managed to get $1200 from him by visiting his house several evenings and sending him lawyerly letters.

This is the only accident I have had with an auto, one I could have avoided by getting the out of his way instead of expecting him to miss me.

After: My friend and I rebuilt the seat frame, and aligned the swingarm. The bike served me well with a subsequent trip to Mexico, California and the Grand Canyon. Suzukis are TOUGH!

1985 Madura. No, I sold it after the trip, it was coated with Mexican tar from the roads. But, I bought another one last year, it's in prime condition.

Amazing to have a car run up your rear, like that, the rim and tire don't even look damaged! You sure that wasn't just a wheelie, gone bad?
