Has anyone been to the Big Island-Kona Coast

Has anyone been to the Big Island; specifically the Kona coast? My wife and I have been to Maui a few times and to Waikiki 3 times. She wanted to try a different island this go around. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Deal, when I finally get the back from Wild West! Just general info, like best beaches to visit, best hotels to stay, things to do, and places to eat. I have talked to a few people here at work and some have enjoyed it and some said it was boring! My favorite place is Waikiki! So I am leaning towards just going back. My wife and i know that place very well.

i have been to Kona. I stayed at the sherridan and i had a great time. There are many things to do on the island from zip line and rain forests on north side. east side has the volcano. then Kona has some great snorkling spots.

I love Kona. It's more relaxed than Waikiki. I stay at the condos in the Hilton Waikoloa Village. Like jeesposito said, there are plenty of things to do.
The volcano is a nice place to visit. I want to take a chopper ride over the lava flow next time I go.
If you like beer, go to the Kona Brewing company.
If you rent a Jeep you can go to some of the harder to get to beaches like the black sand beach at Waipio Valley. There's a 4X4 tour van that will take you down in there, but it's more fun to have your own Jeep so you can take a picnic and stay as long as you like. The locals take bbq pits and such and spend the whole day down there.

Yeah our main purpose it going to relax. We were thinking of staying at a resort that sits on Hapuna Beach or Kua Bay. Yes, love Kona Beer, and not to mention the Coffee. I still have a few days to book so I will be doing some research. Thanks for the input guys!

Yes, it is phenomenal. Don't miss volcanos national park, and staying at Volcano House--go see Pele doing her magic...Big Island is the best...

The Big Island was actually my favorite in some ways. The diving there was actually better than Maui (even though we did Molokini). We saw more life on the Big Island, and the Manta night dive was amazing, especially with our record breaking number of 37 Mantas. (although that was recently broken with 42)

We stayed at the Fairmont Orchid in the Waikoloa area and it's pretty nice up there (but the Hyatt Regency on Maui was nicer in general). It's about a 30 min drive from Kona town, though. It all depends on what your type of "relaxation" really is... this was our honeymoon, so staying up there was nice, but if I were to go back, I would stay in Kona and just dive the whole time on the West coast. The Waikoloa area was expensinve for everything and just a resort town, so if you want local flare and "normal" restaurants and things, definitely go stay down in Kailua-Kona.

I would definitely suggest staying over in the Volcano village. We stayed in a really cute tree house like place for 2 nights and it was awesome.

You NEED to see the Volcanoes National Park at night:

Same caldera during the day:

Another volcano that you can hike into:

The top of Mauna Kea in January, yes that's SNOW!:

That's Haleakala over on Maui in the background!
524811 10150704873912264 2044204669 n

And we even saw whales off the big island!
394327 10150704875297264 300088054 n

I LOVED the Big Island!!

If you have any questions, ask away! I planned our whole honeymoon and did a TON of research before doing so. I don't mind sharing.
