Man arrested for identity theft of a child

Excerpt:

After a six-month investigation, authorities on Tuesday arrested Andres Alfredo Rosales for stealing the identity of a 9-year-old with cerebral palsy who lives in Northern California.

Rosales, of Camarillo, is facing up to three years in prison for the alleged identity theft, according to Vinse Gilliam, deputy chief investigator.

Rosales admitted being in this country illegally and is also facing deportation proceedings, said Gilliam.

In 2005, Rosales applied for work with a medical supply company in Camarillo. He used the stolen identity and the valid social security number of the 9-year-old, who receives Social Security benefits because of his physical disability.

Gilliam said Rosales' employer was notified by Social Security that the number didn't belong to Rosales. The employer gave Rosales, who worked in the manufacturing portion of the medical supply company, 30 days to get the correct Social Security number.

He didn't produce a legitimate Social Security card, and in September he was fired by the company, said Gilliam.

The victim's mother said that in 2002, she lost her purse, which had credit cards and hers and her son's Social Security numbers in it, said Gilliam.

As a result of the identity theft, the victim's Social Security benefits could have been disrupted and discontinued, as it appeared that he was working, according to Gilliam.

Rosales admitted that he bought the victim's Social Security card and numbers on "an unknown street" in Los Angeles, said Gilliam.

I do say this though kudos to the company that fired him because he didn't produce the right documents.
