Excuse my ignorance, but when looking at older vikes, there always seems to be a "box" type area in the tail. That must kill aerodynamics. Wad it necessary to have that large of an area for electronics?

No, we just did not have the technology to make sharp bends like we can now with cheap with plastic. Not to mention we did not have the electronic loops in the racetrack for timing, all scoring was done by human eye and we needed a big area to put numbers on. Imagine trying to tell what number is on the tail of a bike now days with nothing but binoculars as they fly by at 150. Additionally, the only aerodynamic area of a motorcycle is the frontal area, everything after that is just turbulance.
