sounds like why you might be having the problem you had... if the system still had residue from the dot 3 when the 5 was put in...etc.. you get the idea.

some of the 'works' could be gummed/gunked up a bit

but i believe there is like a DOT5-i, which is water saluble oil base. could be wrong though.
