Ben Spies Leaving Yamaha

BOMBSHELL. Spies: I Have Chosen To Leave Yamaha At the End of the Season
by dean adams
Tuesday, July 24, 2012
American Ben Spies said this morning that he won't be riding for Yamaha in MotoGP next season, that he has made the decision to leave the factory Yamaha team at the end of the 2012 season.

Spies said via email this morning:

Yesterday I made a comment on Twitter to cause a stir. (Today) I'll be more in saying that I have chosen to leave Yamaha after this season for a litany of reasons. I will explain more when I feel it is appropriate. I'm discussing my situation with my sponsors and they are behind me. There are a few people at Yamaha who I hate to leave. And they know who they are. I wish Yamaha the best. I won't make any further comments until the offical announcement comes out.

Spies won the World Superbike championship for Yamaha in 2009--his rookie season in WSBK. That remains Yamaha's only WSBK title. Spies also scored rookie of the year honors in Grand Prix in 2010 and also won the Dutch TT last season. He also nearly won the final Grand Prix of the 2011 season at Valencia, but was beaten to the line by World Champion Casey Stoner.

I wonder if it was 100% his choice.

Quit before he got fired. Smart.

Yamaha isn't looking for the "ehh" rider for their factory spots.

That's new one to me. I believe i read that Checa doesn't want anything to do with the Panigale race bike after he tested it.

I was under the impression BMW Italia is running 1 rider next year, Melandri and the current BMW team is to be done as the factory is supporting BMW Italia.

***edit***
guess I was wrong.

But, Spies getting housed by satellite teams is no good. I agree with Blake that is probably wasn't fully his choice. When a lesser bike is taking it to you hard, granted it's a lot of the rider too, I can see where Yamaha could question Ben's resolve with the team.

From what I've read, one of the biggest reasons Yamaha was considering extending his contract was because of the sponsor money he brought from Yamaha America. That seems to be how the major teams are playing this year. Honda bringing in Marquez secures Respol as a sponsor. Rossi will always pull big sponsors. Star riders bring big money that keep the teams going. Personally, I think Spies' performance this year has damaged his confidence in his own ability.

, who knows what's going to happen. I've even read that Rossi might leave and start his own satellite team with either full Honda or Yamaha support. He was rumored to be in talks with Coke as a sponsor as well. His pull with Phillip Morris is helping to keep Ducati funded as it is.

Rossi is the big question mark but if you think about it staying on at Ducati is the only option that really lets him save face

Supposedly, Audi has already told Ducati engineers that they have a lot to fix, starting with the engine. Since the Ducati guys won't listen to their riders, maybe they'll listen to their owners.

well when what you are doing is not working, try something else...
unless you are ducati, then keep doing the same thing somehow believing the results will change on their own.
