so the final question is:

is worth it to be hassled "by the man" over your license plate location?

I'd say it depends on where you live. In the city limits HPD officers are usually too busy to mess with something that insignificant. It may be different in suburbs like Pearland, Sugar Land, etc.

b42day, I dont have the stock set up, currently mine is tucked undertail, but when I sit on it, it is to low and cant be seen. So I have to move it. and if I spend money on moving it I may aswell do something I like.

look like little refelectors, so unless he has some sort of light on the plate it's still illegal. and people have been pulled over for no license plate light.

i've seen little lights that look like those reflectors, but they are LED to show on the plate, but you'll have to run a power cord down there.

not to worried about the wiring, I have a electrical buddy that is planning to help me wire a few things up when the time comes. so there will be a light on mine, I just have to figure out where/how to mount the plate

I Have seen the one in the OP...In my opinion it looked Really clean it was on a GSXR1k but still. but it wasn't that brushed aluminium color.

Maybe paint it black?

and for a light you could always wire it up to a battery pack and mount that to the back of the plate mount(i had an R1 like that) super easy to do.

the plan was to powder coat it black or paint it, balck, so it would blend in a bit to the bike

The chain guard combo looks purposeful. As long as you run some lights on it, you're good.

Knowing myself and how I trip over stuff in my garage all the time, I'll probably kick the plate, bend the bracket, lacerate my calf, and spend $300 at minor emergency for 5 stitches. I think I'll stay with some quality undertail fender eliminators with built-in plate light.

No. X is right. My set up is not legal. I don't have a light. I'm not running wire down my swing arm. It's pretty rare for me to ride on the street. I take my chances. You can get a battery powered light to cover you at night. I have not bothered with it and I have not been stopped yet. I do hate that it gives an officer probable cause to pull me over though.
