Never heard of doing it that way. I always bought a new one. OR i sanded it like they said and then polished it. Never have ever heated it. So i couldnt tell you if it worked or not. Just google more on the heating part.

I think it also matters on how your visor is tinted. If the tint is in between the plastic or placed on the inside of the visor. Cause you dont want to sand on the tint if its actual tint. But most visors are dyed plastic unless you get the expensive(correct) ones.

So I think a lot of it may be circumstancial.
