Why in the did you pull in the clutch and leave it pulled in? That's a sure fire way to get yourself into trouble. If you want to slow down, brake or downshift. Pulling in the clutch and leaving it pulled in means you are "free wheeling" down the highway and are not in complete control of your bike. I know it's only a hand release away, but that's a really bad habit to get into.
So you can engine-brake even in emergency braking situations? I thought that the engine will create more resistance to the brakes and you won't stop as rapidly as during freewheeling.

i agree w/ the others that the OP is an idiot

i disagree w/ others about engine braking, IMO when your stopping for life and death vs track where you're essentially only slowing down squeezing the clutch takes the engine and eventaully lugging the engine out of the equation, and you can concentrate on braking ft and rear. when clutch engaged you now have to take concentration away from braking and putting it on the clutch side also.

Maybe the title of the post should have been "close call" instead of "stupid cager".

That said, who here buys a machine that breaks any speed limit in first gear, and never accelerates past 70 outside of a track?

Oh and speed doesn't kill, it's the sudden stop that poses the problem
There's riding fast, there's speeding then theres being a complete and utter idiot. You buried the needle in # three...
...and yes, speed kills. It's not just a 'sudden stop' that removes skins, breaks bones or ruptures organs. That barbwire will probably give before you come to a stop, but it'll leave some real nice scar. Roadrash..that has considerably more to do with speed and contact time than 'sudden stops'.
