Insurance Question

Hello,

My dad's giving me his '80 Suzuki 450 in a couple of weeks (going to Ohio to get it) and I was wondering what I need to get for it insurance-wise? I've heard that theft is pretty bad in Houston so that seems like an option to pick. For an older bike like this what do you guys recommend?

Liability?
Comprehensive?
Collision?
UM/UIM Motorist (I don't even know what this is)?
Uninsured Motorist?
Roadside Assistance?

Thanks in advance.

for a 33 yr old bike, i'd just get liability

and take MSF before you head up there to get the bike.

full coverage would be dirt cheap on this bike.

If it isn't too expensive I would choose full coverage.

If the cost is a problem and it's a really high rate, liability is your best bet.

Full coverage for me would be well over 350$/month, so I choose Liability.

Even with Liability, I've added the comprehensive theft protection option. This option
covers damage from wind, fire, and theft.

You should call or send a private message to Tuan, he is a sponsor on here. (Moto Insurance)

This guy is very knowledgeable when it comes to Insurance. He got me the lowest available rates for both my Moto and Life insurance policies.

I would price it out a couple of different insurance companies and see how much it all is for just liability vs full coverage (w and w/o UM/UIM). Full coverage might be worth it if its cheap enough. Honestly though I don't know if it would really be a target for theft, but you never know.

BTW I just learned what UM/UIM is this week so I'll explain. Uninsured Motorist (UM)/Underinsured Motorist (UIM) coverage functions many as a health insurance type policy where they cover medical costs related to an accident where the other party is at fault and they don't have sufficient or any insurance to cover your damages. It has nothing to do with the bike itself other than to say you were on it when you had the accident. It is an absolute must in Houston if you do not have a fool-proof health insurance plan that would cover you in the event of an accident.

That all being said the best option might be Liability + UM/UIM for you. If the bike has sentimental value then you may want to consider comprehensive coverage.

Looking at Nada this bike in "fair" condition is only worth about $650 and in excellent goes up to about $2000. Although I think those prices would never be seen in the market its something to consider as well.

Thanks for the help, guys. Being that it's my dad's bike it does have some sentimental value so I'll get quotes for full coverage and go from there depending upon the price.
