Lucydad, My guess is that your ninjer 500 is about off 5-8% the speed indicated. Mine on the 250 is about 5% off.

To me, That's annoying as though. How do you find out how much your speedometer is off by?

Lol speeding ticket

I got a ticket for speeding once, it was dumb, I'll just do the speed limit from now on.

I heard that heal tech has a speedo healer. I never looked into it though.

Put a GPS on your bike, ride at 60 mph indicated by the gps, see what your speedo says, and calculate the difference...

I've gotten a speeding ticket at 96 before in the car. It was dumb and expensive. That being said I cannot just cruise at 65mph on the bike, I tried. I just can't. Too slow.

Do you have one? What are your thoughts on it?

I don't have a GPS, is there another way to figure it out? I thought about driving next to my friend's car, but from what I understand even cars are a little bit off.

Newer cars with stock tire size are close, within 1-2 mph in the 55-70 range at least.

Newer bikes aren't usually that far off at highway speeds, maybe 4-5% ..

But they get worse at higher speeds.

Or get someone with a GPS or Speedohealer to pace you..

Plus side on the Speedohealer is the memory function, push the button and see your top speed..

Or maybe thats a down side... LOL!

If somebody is in more of a hurry than I am - regardless of how fast I'm going - I just move over and let them pass.

Rule #7a of ZEN of Driving: People going slower than you are not all slow pokes.
Rule #7b of ZEN of Driving: People going faster than you are not all maniacs.

As with any rules, there are always... exceptions.

the few times i have been on the SW freeway on the bike this year have been around 10 in the morning on sunday mornings, coming back from my morning ride..
i find that as I come thru rosenburg towards town the traffic actually picks up speed.
the cbr mirrors are a pain the as you cannot actually see behind you, you can see to the side, but not your lane... so being in the left hand lane means riding while constantly turning your head to see if anyone is coming up on you...not something I enjoy doing... so i ride the second lane in and just use the left for passing when I need to. by the time i get to westpark i am in the pucker mode until i get off at shepherd. i do not like riding any of the freeways or loops in the houston area...sort of feels like gambling with your body.

I use Ulysse Speedometer/pro and also Trackmaster on my phone.

Both are free apps in droid market, initially, but access more settings with the pro versions. this way you dont have to use a seperate GPS.

Cable operated speedos are usually less accurate than those by magnet/sensor. but the faster you go, the more they are off (cable and sensor type).
