Second Set of Eyes and hands...

Looking for a second set of eyes and hands to help me with the SV this week sometime. I live in the Meyerland area. I will be trying to check for water in my oil to verify no blown head gasket... then probably pulling the thermostat and hooking up my cooling system direct until the new one comes in.

Prepared to throw in Beer of your choice.

yep, that is something you can do all by yourself... no problem... however if you want to supply beer for someone to sit and watch you, that might work.

Drain the oil into a clear container and let it sit for a while. Water will seperate and you'll see it easily.

Unless it had a major leak in which case it will be readily apparent.

So far as the thermostat, try and find a flat washer the same OD and install, it will restrict the flow a tad and help the cooling. Or in a pinch, gut the stock thermostat out and reinstall.

Yeah I was more worried I would miss the water in the oil if it was a small amount. I am more than capable of doing the wrenching part.... prolly going to gut the thermostat tonight and see if it fixes it. I would like to make the meet tomorrow on my own bike...

I think if there were a crack in your head gasket you would be seeing smoke coming out of your tail pipe. No? Have you fulling flushed the system yet and then tried refilling it and bleeding it from scratch or do you know its definitely the thermostat and not the water pump?

Also you were correct, one thermostat, two water temp sensors (that's what I was thinking of).

Yeah there should be smoke coming out of the tailpipe... I didn't see any..and noone mentioned it to me... so I have high hopes.

I don't know that its definitely the thermostat but thats a cheap part, something I can check by just gutting the thermostat and seeing if it runs cooler and the water temp sensors work...cause I get a reading on my dash. haha.

Yeah the water temp sensor that send the signal to the gauge cluster is at the thermostat and then the other one is in the radiator and tells the fan when to turn on so both of those work. I was just wondering if the pump might have failed (the other possibility). Don't know how you would check that though, maybe take that right hand side hose off and try to crank it w/o actually starting the bike and see if you can see the impeller move...don't know though.

Well if it overheats with no thermostat in it... its not pumping

Agree on the restriction. No thermostat will allow too much flow and coolant won't have enough time to absorb the heat from the engine.
