My opinion is to get a good helmet. If you want under $200, I'd buy a Scorpion before an HJC or KBC. And do some research on standards testing for DOT, BSI, SNELL, ECE and make a more informed decision (it's hard to find the info because there's not a lot out there, so you'll have to be persistent)...and of course you need to go and try some on. I found that even though people rave about Shoei helmets they DO NOT fit my head shape comfortably at all. You won't know that until you try a few on.

I went from an HJC CL-14 ($170ish) to a Suomy Spec-1R (much more $$) and I noticed lighter weight, more comfortable liners, no fog visor (a BIG issue for me in the cold with the HJC), it's quieter yet breathes equally as well (size difference probably influenced this), much easier to operate visor, it's BSI rated instead of SNELL, and the least important of all is the graphics look 100X better quality-wise.

And one subjective difference is the Suomy visor seems clearer than the HJC, but that could all be in my head. Just my $.02.

So while I think the KBC would have been fine, paid 150$, the suomy feels very much worth the money(400$).
Yep. The first time I rode with my Suomy after owning an HJC I was riding down 610 in complete awe of the difference. And at the track I forget I have the Suomy on. It is so much better that I hate I didn't buy a Suomy much much sooner.

If you've ever played football in school it's like comparing the football helmets you get in junior high versus what you get in high school varsity. In junior high you are pretty much wearing tight hard foam covered with harder plastic. On the high school varisty team you get a Nike Air padded helmet which is like wrapping your head in a pillow. Both protect your noggin relative to their varying degrees of intensity, but the comfort factor makes the true difference. It always comes down to money...my philosophy is spend just a little more than what you initially inteded to spend and you will feel better in the long run. Plus you'll want to keep it longer.

Ride Safe!!!

hey you can get a Arai, for 400.00 and up. a Arai saved my head and i hit the pavement at 100mph and still have the helment here as a reminder.i bought a kbc just for a spare and it droped 4 feet and cracked the helment right on the chin. if i use that lid when i recked i would be missing my face. it's your brain you make the choice. i will spend the extra money for a good lid

i say go try on helmets to the the feel of them. dont worry about what these other people are saying about your life. any helmet u get that is dot and snell approve will have the same safety rating as the other. snell and dot only has pass and fail. there is no in b/w. weather u pay $100 or $650 for a helmet as long as it is both snell they will have the same protection standard. now the extra money u pay is the material used to make the helmet. the more expensive helmets use a lighter material to get the same protection. and your extra money goes into the ventalation. also the extra money u paying for is the comfort. as far as safety goes it will all be the same as long as it is snell and dot approve. Suomy isnt snell or Dot approve cause they do not use the u.s. system they go by another system but it is the same. i had a friend that took his $650 suomy helmet to the DPS to get his license but they decline his helmet because it was not DOT approve..LOL any how dont worry about the price. get a helmet that you are comfortable w/. They will all be safe. Note it depend on what u are going to do. if u just want to cruise around the city from time to time then u probably dont need a $600 helmet. if u are going to race then yes u want to have a lighter and a helmet that vents better. what i just said about the safety is a fact. all snell and dot approve helmets have the same safety rating. either pass or fail keep that in mind.

I myself is a shoei fan. i own 3 shoei. 1 Rf 1000 and 2 X-11. the X-11 has the best ventalation system. plus i have a round head which fits in shoei alot better than it does in a suomy, or arai.

agreed, they all pass a minimum standard. similar to cars, they all pass DOT min. standards, if you had to crash a car, would you rather be in a Volvo or suzuki (car) ?

funny you wear such nice lids, but advocate cheap lids (walmart BELL DOT lid $80, cheapest DOT lid i've found)

fyi i have a large round head and think ARAI Corsair fits the best, and i tried an X-11 back to back. see alot of this boils back down to opinion. yours is no better then anybody elses or mine.

i never said my was better than any one else. i said they are all safety. i just prefer shoei's thats all im saying. as far as my concern i dont care what any one else wears as long as im happy with what i got. also price is some time an issue. not everyone wants to spend $600 + on a helmet. not eveyone rides all the time. i dont have a car. i only have a bike to ride every day to and from work 23 miles in traffic or where ever i want to go. so yes i will spend the extra money for a lighter helmet that vents better, it just makes sense to me. Bottom line u dont have to spend a whole lot of money to be safe.

hopefully i will be getting a car by the end of the year. dont know if i can go through another winter w/o a car to work.

me personally none. i would never buy one. i dont even think about safety when i bought my other cars in the past. it depends on what im looking for. performance or just reliability. right now im looking to get a G35. i have no idea what the safety rating is. i know it is DOT and that is good enough for me. i want it cause of the performance and the way it looks. i have a mustang that i have a roll cage in that only because i have to have it for the track. so to answer your question ill be n a G35 in my next accident if i get it to one.

im not avoiding any thing. i really have no info on those cars. i never worked on or been in those cars before. i dont even know anyone with those type of cars. most of my friends and family own Toyota (lexus), honda (acura). as of those two i have no idea which one is safer and i dont care. what are u trying to get at??? Y i got a x-11 but saying a cheaper helmet is just as safe??? i have no idea what is your point.
