In my case, my ankle would not have separated due to the support in the boots I use. Work boots just cover your skin with leather which is good, but riding boots (most) offer side to side anti twisting support as well.

I had a get off at Oak Hill many years ago at 120mph the only damage I had was a small cut on my trigger finger from the gloves coming apart.
The leathers were wasted and I walked away and had a beer

It is up to you. Personally if it isin't covered in leather, you don't care about it. I know it is hot as fudge out there, but at the end of the day I would like to go home after a crash. The choice is yours. Get a camelbak and fill it with ice, top off with gateraid.

It happens when you try to get faster than your old used up tires

i always rock a leather jacket (non perf'd) if i'm riding around town, wether its commuting or going to meets, or riding for fun. i have a textile/mesh jacket but i feel naked w/o leather on.

of course on track it's full suit, gauntlets, boots, etc.

If you choose to wear jeans, spend the $20 on some knee guards at the very least.
Cuts heal, knee replacements suck.

My summer jacket is a Cortech textile/mesh with leather on the shoulders/arms/back.. basically the normal impact/sliding spots. It breaths extremely well.

Make sure if you get textile or mesh for the summer, to try it on WITHOUT all the optional liners. You want a tight fit to keep the armor in place, so if you plan on wearing it without the liners, size it accordingly.

Leathers are not that important when you ride but VERY important when you crash.

Get some leathers.

They not only help protect you, but they also provide a great level of wind resistance.
