UTMB-Galveston, mecca for m/c accident victims

so that dude that crashed on 99, that i posted up a fews ago, got transferred to UTMB Galveston

they are planning on implanting shark skin around his heel area since it got ground off, then laying human skin over that

anyway, i was told the floor he's on, there are like 7 m/c accident victims there, all veg's......

anybody know? is it like a guinea pig hosp. for m/c accident peeps?

Maybe UTMB-Galveston has special facilities for skin grafts and such since the majority of of bike accidents cause a ton of road rash?

That's where I was after my wreck. Couldn't tell you anything about the place because I don't remember it, but I've been seeing the same Neuro and ortho docs since then and they have their together for sure.

Yep. Utmb is known for their burn center. Anything related to skin goes to utmb. On a side note, there's a bad doc at Ben taub who specializes in wound care.

no. it is a temporary cover till your own skin can grow. it is a sythetic skin produced from shark cartilage. the product is called Integra. Racerx is confused about it's application.

i was specifically told skin vs cartilage. but the story teller is non-medical also, so who knows.

dude has no heel left. they are using shark ? to fix it.

nope, they aren't. the slang name for integra is "shark skin" derived from the ingredients used to make it. it is a TEMPORARY cover used to facilitate healing.

the main problem with accident like he has is that if the injury goes down to the bone, they cannot simply cover with skin and be on their way. there has to be meat for the skin to grow on. When I had a similar injury to my arm, they took abdominal muscle to cover the bone and then grafted skin to cover that. integra(shark skin) is mainly used in burn injuries when there isn't enough skin to graft due to the extent for surface area damaged. so they use integra to temporarily cover the damaged sites in order to protect exposed areas until skin can be harvested and transplanted. I cannot think of a reason they would be using it for just a heal injury unless the other properties of it (faster capillary regeneration) are being utilized. back when I had my injury, the "muscle flap" (name of the procedure) was new and prior to the new technology, doctors simply took off the affected limb.
