450 - Honda or Yamaha

Looking at bikes again and wanted to see what you guys thought.

2012 Honda CRF450r or 2012 Yamaha YZ450f??

Nothing scientific yet just asking if you own one to weigh in.

You can never compare with the reliability of a Honda.

Well I like that Yamaha comes with Excel rims already, sits an inch higher stock (I am tall), and has a newer motor with rear port exhaust. I think Honda's are reliable, seem to have a nice power band, and overall I enjoyed the bikes I've had in the past.

Price is roughly the same on both out the door and both are short driving distance. Both will need suspension mods so discussing suspension is irrelevant at this point.

Anything else I could be missing? I read tests from 2010 to now and each year a different bike is #1, #2, etc and for crazy reasons, so hard to decide based on that. I know that I will ultimately have to decide but just looking for insight.

I like them both, just looking for one thing that puts one ahead of the other.

I have a 2011 yz450f and love it. Suspension is actually really good right out of the box.

Aftermarket springs and new fluid, fork seals, and you will feel the difference! That is if your jumping

Can't go wrong with either. That been said, i love the Honda 450's. Through the years, Honda 450 powerbands have been considered a bit more controllable than the Yamaha 450 powerbands. People say the Yamaha has a more explosive feel to it which alot of people don't care for while others do. 450's have soo much power that i'd pick the Smoother, more linear powerband that Hondas have had over the Yamahas.

I must say that the new Yamahas just sexy as . Pure looks this year, Yamaha takes the cake.

I rode the Yamaha at Rio during the Yamaha ride day. The suspension was really nice and plenty of power. Brakes aren't as good as my KTM's. Heres a good article that compares all of the 2012 bikes,

Well for me suspension is not an issue since the suspension will have to be reworked as soon as I get the bike. Bikes are usually set up for 180lb riders.

Im partial to HONDA dirt bikes. Its hard to beat the 450. Its a beast. Before i broke my back in 2005 i raced for Honda and went from a 125, 250 4stroke, 250 2 stroke, 450... All were killer bikes. I think the reliability, product, all around HONDA gets my vote.

Just out of curiousity, why have you narrowed it down to the Honda or Yamaha?

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the 5 majors. That being said, I love my 2009 KX450F on the track. And I love my 2009 KTM 300XC in the woods.

I had 2 KX bikes and was never really happy with them at all. Know few people with KX450's and they have had nothing but issues with them. Never been a suzuki fan at all, just never really liked their bikes. I like the reviews that I have read on Honda and Yamaha. They both score well usually in their match ups and usually the pro/con write up is minimal with regards to things that need to be fixed on the bikes.

Makes sense. I have ridden a 2009 CRF450R and a 2012 YZ450F. I prefered the Honda. For some reason the front end felt heavy on the Yamaha. I felt like i was having to rev to keep the front end up over the jumps...may just be my riding style, and probably something I would adjust to pretty easily, but I didn't like it in my limited on that bike.
