Does anyone on MH ride with a herniated disc?

Just asking if anyone has had a herniated disc and still rides? since I have a L5S1 herniated disc and question if need to give it up?

I have l4-s1 fused, 3 herniated discs and 3 bulging in cervical.

I cant ride cruisers. Back hurts like . Sport bikes align my lower back, and I can ride for hours.

I ride with scoliosis and I have had to sell bikes because of how uncomfortable they were to me the last one being a f4i I picked up a dr650 and thus far I love it. Find something with a plush suspension and upright riding position it will make life a lot easier on you.

Jimmy,

I think sports bike will help. My mom has herniated disk, and her exercise resembles sports bike body positionin, where sitting down, you have to lean forward to ease compressions between disks.
Hope i'm right and can keep seing you riding the steel horse around.

yeah..IMO sportbike position is less stress on the lower back....the gastank and core muscles help support you..compared to sitting upright on the spine and jarring the discs from bumps....however the soft dirtbike suspension may work...but the seat is too narrow..

giving up riding

I have 4 herniated discs in my lumbar reagion A calcium/bone fusion connecting L.3 & L.4 which also caused mild scoliosis in my lower spine, I can ride quite A long time without much problems. Pull over and take A break if you need it. And I have an upright bike Kaw.ZRX1200r. But don't give up riding because you might antisipate some possible discomfort, Plus there are some exercises that can help the discs dramatically, but you have to actually do them.

I have a fusion at C4-C5. Sport bikes put my head at an angle my neck can't take for long.

I think you guys with L-series issues have it worse than I do.

I herniated L4 and L5 in '98 and was laid up for a few weeks. Multiple epidurals and therapy and they still give me a lot of problems.

I damaged the discs around T10 and T11 in '99 when I broke those vertebrae and 3 ribs on my R6. Had to wear a brace for a long time, and often wore it outside my leathers. It hurt like a mother to ride, but I had friends to help me on and off the bike if I needed it.

I have disc and soft tissue issues at C2 and C3 from a car wreck in 2006. I've had a lot of therapy and two surgeries for those. When my neck gets stiff and the muscles tighten up, I get partial facial paralysis on my right side, intermittent tics and severe migraines so I wear light helmets and stretch a lot.

You can absolutely keep riding. Stretch a LOT. Build your core muscles, and don't push it too much when it's telling you to back off. Take anti inflamatories and get on your back and ice it when the sciatica starts to set in.

Your back will never be the same again, but don't let it stop you. We're never as good as we were, but that's life. The clock is always ticking away so do what you love. If you enjoy it, you'll find a way to keep doing it.

Riding would be the least of my worries. I still play lacrosse and occasional hockey with my back problems. It is going to hurt every day no matter what. Some worse than others. screw it. I think I would be MUCH worse off now if I had sat on my on SSDI (as the doctors instructed) than ignoring it and keeping active. It has been 11 years now. No better, no worse.

my next question is did you go to physical therapy ?
I actually herniated my disc due to work digging and crawling since im an electrician. I really didn't see it coming. Don't know who to go to, as far as referals my doctor refered me to one next door to him. I haven't gone to a physical therapist yet. Most of my pain is a numb feeling in my left which sometimes radiates down to my knee. I always feel pain on lower back at my waist line and this affects my walking. I don't know anyone personally who has this problem so I figured I check here and see if anyone else might fill me in on their personal experience. After reading all of yours post I feel a little better knowing everyone else still rides. I have a 05 R6 and it's the most comfy seat out of all the other bikes i've been on. Im only 129lbs at most and generally just ride around on short errands.

On CBS Sunday Morning they had a story about a doctor at the Texas Spine & Joint Hospital in Tyler that has a new treatment for repairing discs

A new hope for back pain sufferers? (link)

L5S1 for years now, used to hurt to ride the cruiser because the bumps were straight up and down but its fine on anything else I lean a little forward on.
