Update: Florida man dies in weekend crash at Barber Motorsports

Published: Monday, April 30, 2012, 9:05 AM Updated: Monday, April 30, 2012, 10:34 AM By Carol Robinson -- The Birmingham News

LEEDS, Alabama - A Florida man died Sunday in a motorcycle crash at Barber Motorsports Park.

Brandon Williford, 33, was pronounced dead on the scene at 5:17 p.m., Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Phillip Russell said today.

Russell said information they received indicated the park was holding an open riding day. Two motorcyclists were headed into Turn 17 when they collided and lost control.

Williford, of Riverview, Fla., died on the scene.

The track this weekend was rented by Sportbike Track Time for the event. The company released the following statement today:

"It is with regret and sadness that we confirm a fatality took place during Sportbike Track Time at Barber Motorsports Park on Sunday resulting in the death of one of our participants and a member of our Sportbike family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the participant's family and we ask that you respect their privacy during this time."

Updated at 10 a.m. to include statement from Sportbike Track Time

sad to hear. It can happen to any one of us at any time. Hopefully he died doing what he loved. I'd rather go that way than old and decrepit wishing I hadn't been so scared to live a fuller life.

Amen.. I am in no hurry to go but... if it was on a track doing what I love that is some consolation.

RIP hope the tracks are gnarly in heaven.
