DIY Oil Change (Material Choice)

The K6 that I have is due for a change... last changed occured at 2,000 miles ago with Mobil 1 Full Synthentic 10W-40 with a Fram oil filter...

Any recommendations for this upcoming one?

Oil (Mobil 1, Castro, Royal Purple, Motul, Red Line, Motorex)

Filter (Fram or K&N)???

Much appreciated.

Heard some irregular engine/valve related noise... saw oil level to be low... that's why I'm about to change it.

I use K&N not that I believe it is really that much better (even though it could be) but I order them when on sale for same price I can pick up a cheap fram for at the parts store, and the K&N has a Bolt head on it and has a spot for safety wire... sure makes changes easier....

I only use K&N filters due to the nut they have welded on them.

+1 on Rotella. It's even JASO-MA certified for those who wish to say "never use anything but motorcycle oil". Now it can officially be called motorcycle oil.

I too, use rotella, and yes the product is JASOMA certified as well as SM or SN i cant remember which, but its very good for our wet clutch bikes. not so much for dry clutches.

I switched from Amsoil to rotella (dino) (tried rotella syn also) Have to say the Rotella T formula is just as effective as the Amsoil in my sv650.

Filters are filters. There are lots of studies on the interwebs where people dissect both premium and factory filters and show they that are basically the same. K&N are the best imo, not because of a perceived improved filtration, but because of the safety wire hole/ wrench lug on the end. Which makes oil changes easier with basic tools or allows you to tie the filter in place if you are worried about it. I use the hole to hang my filters over a bucket to drain them before I haul them off.

Here's my opinion on oil: Make your own decision.

Pick the one with the marketing that you like the best. Oil is oil. My bike lists a half dozen acceptable weights, and only requires that the oil be rated to at least API SF.

My bike has a dry clutch, so your particular bike might want a motorcycle specific oil for a wet clutch, I don't know. Just read the manual, and pick an oil that meets the qualifications.
