Dude please dont get a new bike for your 1rst bike.....I regret everyday that i baught my bike brand new..... Pick up a late 90's or early 2000-2003 with some minor cosmetic flaws. You will be thanking me later... Another thing i would take a look at the sv 650 from suzuki....Get a little older one and have a blast...YOu will learn so much more by riding this bike then you could ever learn by riding a true ss bike....THEN after about 10,000 miles sell her and buy a nice new ss bike. PLus you can normaly find them for about 2800-3800 sometimes cheaper so if you decide this whole riding thing isnt for you you can sell it and not be out hardley any money.

1rst thing is 1rst take the msf cource Motorcycle safty cource best 300 bucks you will ever spend.

Dont be a true do the right thing. Start small!!!

Mh should get some kind of sponsorship package for starter bikes. Mebbe Suzuki would ante up a tidy sum for a sticky in the Intro forum that would recommend the SV 650 to every noob that came in asking, "for my first bike should I get a boss hoss or a turbo busa? Which one do girls like better?"

lmao I own a 636... first street bike, but i played in the dirt for a long time before steping up to the big boys. the 636 is a of a bike for the 600 class. of course its not the fastest bike around. 750's and 1000+ bikes are faster. but when your talkin 600's the 636 is quick for its class. So i agree with everyone else. go to a dealership, sit your on a couple of touring bikes and pick the one that you feel the most comfortable on and then go out and find a older used one!

that way when you lay it down you wont be kicking yourself for messing up a brand new bike.

You'll be hard pressed to find a 6R or 6RR sitting on a dealer floor locally. There "might" be a used one, but not a new one. In fact the new Zixxer 6Rs are going to start trickling in sometime in Feb of 07.

The 650R is a fine bike. Someone I went to school with at UHCL owns one and came out with us on a ride to Bay City/Matagorda. All of us (including 1000RR, 600RR, 3 636s, R6, GSX-R600) were quite impressed with the 650R. The torque is amazing and on a spirited jaunt back to the CL area via 59 the 650 had no problems keeping the 636 in sight. Main difference was in top end; but who needs to go 160mph on the street anyway (I do).

I whole heartedly recommend this bike to anyone who asks. The SV is also another bike in this catagory that I recommend. It's your money and you should buy what your heart yearns for, but remember that your head should make the final decision for your purchase.

My recommendation would be a MSF course and a 650R lol.
