Plate light LED help

Hi everyone!

Sorry that my first post is one needing help instead of an intro but to the problem at hand. I just picked up an 08 gixxer 600 and it had a swing arm mounted plate. Took that off and mounted a plate that sits under the tail for a cleaner look. Lurked around and saw that people were getting tickets for non visible plates and i really can't afford a ticket for that at the moment. I got a cheapo LED(12v) strip from walmart and spliced positive to the black w/white stripe plate wire on the bike and negative to the grey one. Turned the bike on to test it and nothing lit up. Every other light on the bike lit up so i was puzzled as to why the plate light wasn't working. I also took off the seat to find a white connector just sitting there which i had no idea what it connected to. That along with velcro which might of held a power commander at one time. Any ideas to what the problem may be?

Attached some pics to what I was looking at.

The white plug is for diagnostics.
The black and white wire is a ground, so you have that hooked up incorrectly.
Typically the license plate positive is brown but I don't have a schematic handy.
Give me a call later today when we open and I'll verify the positive.
