My AMA Experience

"But are you having fun?"

That seemed to be the question of the weekend. Regardless of who I spoke with, that's what they wanted to know. And to be quite honest with you, I sure as was! I mean, come on, you're at an AMA event with some of the most talented riders and you have the best seat in the house. How could you not be having fun?!

Star Struck!

I was hoping to document my first Pro race and keep everyone updated the best I could. You know...pictures, laptimes, splits and so forth but I found myself being a lot busier than expected. As prepare as I thought I was, I wasn't. And a lot of that had to do with not being familiar with the AMA's protocol. It's nothing more than what we're use to with the CMRA but I let myself become overwhelmed with being at "The Big Show." As I walked to and from our pit area trying to stay focused on whatever task I was handling at the time, I would get distracted by all the big names that I was use to seeing on tv. "Oh, there is Martin Cardenas, I should go get his autograph. No, gotta stay focused!" Or "Wait, is that Eslick? Wonder if I could get a picture with him. No time for that, Zo! Gotta swap tires!" Yes, I know, I was being a fan boy. What can I say?! LOL!

My Results...

Jc and I had ridden Road Atlanta in 2010 for a WERA national, so we both felt pretty confident going into our first Pro race that we would at the very least qualify. We did, barely. I learned a few things about qualifing. Dunlop offers a soft tire for a reason, also known as qualifer. Next time use the thing, Alonzo! Mental note taken! It wouldn't have given me a second or two, but a few tenths would have given me a slightly better grid position. And the last thing you want to do is get shuffled towards the back at Road A during the start. Now, as much as I would like to blame it on a bad start, or getting shuffled to the back in the esses, I won't. Truth is, I didn't bring it. I did managed to keep it upright and bring her home in one piece. With that, I am happy!

Any regrets?

My only regret is that I didn't spend enough time taking it all in. It seemed to happen so fast that before I knew it, the weekend was over. Next time I'm going to try and relax a little more...

Thanks for the memories!

Getting there was half the battle, qualifing was the other. But what I came to realize was how important the help you receive from others really is. Jeff Kulchinski's help in the pits was invaluable this weekend. Raymond Van Antwerp made sure I had an umbrella girl. Little things like this go a long way! I made some really great memories during this trip and shared a lot of laughs with some really great people. I spent my vacation time racing an AMA event for Pete's sake! How cool is that?! Also got a chance to drive a big rig for the first time, icing on the cake...lol! I would have never thought in a million years that I would be doing an AMA event. But because of you guys, I did! So many ppl played a role in helping me get there. I'd like to thank each and every single one of you! Whether it was a pat on the back, a txt saying "Good luck" or a simple "we're rooting for you" msg via fb. I really do appreciate it! Thank you guys! And a huge thanks to my sponsors for sticking with me even though I missed the better part of last year...

Thanks for the update, it's awesome you had the opportunity, took the chance and made it a successful weekend.
You always were a smooth rider and a great instructor and it's great to see your doing good things with your skills.
Good job!
