Auto (truck) mechanic question

Have a question for ya. Have a 02 ford diesel 250
batteries seem good. but get a click when turning the key. Cleaned posts and still click. thinking its either the starter sylinoid (sp) or the starter.
Isn't there a way to spark across the sylinoid to eliminate the queston about the starter?
any ideas?
Michael

turn the ignition on then cross the two terminals on the solenoid with a screwdriver. If the starter turns replace the solenoid. You can also take the battery out and take it to any parts store and have it tested. keep us posted

yep. use insulated screwdriver to make connection between big terminal and little terminal with wire on it. That should make the starter turn.

usually the click u hear is the solinoid kicking in just not enough juice to turn starter over. Test the battery too

What's the static voltage of the battery, and what's the voltage drop from the positive battery terminal to the B+ on the starter, and from the negative battery terminal to the chassis? It's possible that there's corrosion in one of the battery wires, which could cause high resistance and in turn not allow enough power to get to the starter.

Generally, if it's clicking, the starter solenoid is working, and it's probably a battery problem.

the truck is a diesel and has 2 batteries. Will have to mess with tomorrow as i am at work. But thanks for the info on what to try. Is it posible that the lead to the starter may be dirty?
I pulled all 4 battery terminals and cleaned and it does seem to have all electrical power, ie lights, normal horn etc. just a big click when the key is turned.
will try to jump across the sylinoid tomorrow.
thanks
Michael

Could be dirty at the starter yes. Oil leaks and dirt can do it.

If it's an 02, and it's got the original batteries, I'm betting that both of them are bad. OEM batteries generally only last 3-4 years, especially with it being as hot as it gets down here.

the thing has two very large batts and one very high amp starter. just check the voltage at the starter when you turn the key. if it is above ~ 9 then you have a bad starter.

ps my wifes car is an f250 super duty diesel and one batt will start it in warm weather she has replaced both in just 250k miles.

quick non-mechanical way to tell if the batteries are bad:
turn the head lights on
stand in front of the truck and get somone to try to start it, if the lights go really dim almost off, or off, then more then likely the batts are bad.
If the lights stay on and dont change then somthing other than the batts

make sure you put it on voltage. a good batt should read 13.00 to 14.6 for a good batt while its running, any lower mean its bad

don't you live in pasadena?

Part of the problem is that it won't start. So not sure what a volt meter would read on a battery with the truck off.
I will most likely just pull both batteries and take thenm somewhere to get looked at.
and NO, live out in Cypress now.
Wife got tired of my and gave me the heave Ho. Actually traded me in for her Loser, alcoholic Boss. She figured he was better than 17+ years of marriage

All is cool tho' I have found SEVERAL friends that keep me more than company. One is the granddaughter of the owner of the greesheet and another is the mother of a NFL quarterback that was drafted by the Texans a couple years ago and was traded to the Bears. (well injured and getting back into shape by playing arena ball this winter)
all is good

Mr. Hansen, take the batteries to any outozone, o reilly and have them tes them, they'll do a load test, after that, if they are good, on the right fender should be a solenoid, with something suitable jump the two big terminals, if it still doesn't crank, most likely the starter is history, if it does, then either the solenoid is bar, or, is not getting any signal from the ignition switch, or the neutral safety switch is bad.

Will do that hopefully friday or sat. No big hurry.
thanks for the info. Have asked on the ford diesel sites and they all seem to think it is the same thing as mont of you guys. one or both batteries may be bad.
Hopefully that is all it is. I don't want to have to mess with changing out the starter.
will let you know ONCE i get to looking at it.
