So yeah, I'm here now, yay!

So I'm not a rider yet, I haven't even taken my MSF course yet or bought gear. I've been wanting a bike for a bout like 7-8 years, no lie. There has always been something that came first and when I did get serious about it, after talking to a guy at work about it, he died on his after only 2-3 months. It was around Christmas and he has a newborn, it was bad. Anyway, not to be too much of a downer, I put it on hold after that but not anymore.

Like most newbs I want too much bike to make up for all the time I lost not having a bike, but that's not smart. I REALLLYYY want a KTM SMC 690, but I will have to settle for a bike that would actually help increase my skills rather than hinder my confidence, or....you know...kill me. I still want to be able to do some freeway riding so bikes like the DRZ400 are not great choices. I'll likely just settle for a Ninja 250 even though I see myself selling it in about 6 months. I did consider an older Honda CB, though, thinking that a I might be more likely to keep it even after I get another bike, unlike the Ninja. I dig naked bikes like supermotos, fighters and cafe racers. Anyway, I look forward to ACTUALLY getting a bike, it it's taking too long.

Yeah, that's looking like a good option. Beats buying a 250 just to have to sell it, especially since I need a cafe anyway....then a supermoto, then a super sport, then a street tracker.....you get the picture. Looks like a fun project.

Yes, but too much power does nothing to help matters. A real motard is a glorified dirt bike in my mind, I want a street tard that can cruise at 80mph occasionally. So, 4 stroke (six speed?) with an engine that isn't so high strung that oil change intervals are measured in hours. The KTM 690 is recommended at 3k miles but I've read that they have rocker arm/bearing issues. Some guys recommend replacing them at 9k miles like it's supposed to be a wear part, it's only like a $60 part but that does not inspire confidence. KTM has to know about the issue but has not commented AFAIK.

Well, it's a 690 single with plenty of low end torque, the common opinion is that it's too much bike for a newb. I could get a 450 or something, but I like the "buy once, cry once" philosophy. I would always want the 690.
