Icon variant review

Finally got a new lid! For you guys that been thinking about buying the Icon Etched Variant, it looks better that how it feels while on freeway, I guess I'm still getting used to the visor being there, specially when you look back that catches wind. Hate the way the shield mechanism is set up, very poorly done. Other than that its badass, it definitely gets a lot of attention and is real comfortable. Any questions hit me up, ill post pics later on

I have one, I ride with it everyday, it's a really cool looking helmet.

It's .

But a cool looking helmet. I have the gloss black with gold visor.

I just ordered an Arai XD-4 to replace/supplement my Variant. I look forward to comparing them to see which one is less . I'm hoping it's the one with the larger MSRP just out of principal, but we'll see.

BTW, On the variant: you get used to the wind against the bill, or develop more neck muscles, one of the two. You don't get used to the clusterfuck that is the face shield change. Pick a shield you like and try to stick with it if you want to use the original hardware. The aluminum screws love to crossthread and up. Each time you do that, it's a 10$ hardware pack. I just gave up and rethreaded the brass inserts and put in a couple of 6mm bolts. A 10mm wrench is a lot easier to use than that bullshit 1/2" long screwdriver they gave you for those softheaded aluminum fasteners.

They are dual sport helmets, not dirt bike helmets. Notice that they have visors. I tried the Variant with goggles once offroad, the visor design gets in the way. I'm pretty sure Icon markets it as an urban/stunting helmet. Every one else calls it a dual sport.

The point is that the visor on the Icon was marketed as aerodynamically vented not to catch wind. However, it doesnt work well, it's alright though.

Hopefully the Arai handles goggles better.

I'm waiting to wear out my stock tires before i get some more aggressive ds tires. Till then I'm practicing not dropping the Iron Pig in soft stuff.

I just got the variant too. The benefits is you have a bigger field of vision and the visit helps block the sun

usually "dual" or "multi" purpose items are hoped to be good compromises and not intended to be really good at anything...and if the compromise suits your needs, enjoy the out of it.

That is true, the field of vision is pretty great on the Variant, especially since it's lens is optically correct. Very little weirdness around the edges. I had a Nexx X30 which also had a big visor, but the Variant blew it away as far as peripheral vision went.

I don't understand. He's on a gixxer6, why does he need a dual sport helmet?

Field of vision increase vs. aerodynamics?

I sometimes wish I had an actual visor (bill type) when riding straight at the sun commuting I10 daily... but yeah, I assume the aerodynamics would rip my head off... and that's at posted speeds. I think if you remember nose down, it might be tolerable. Don't try to glance up at those birds though lol.

Around surface streets, I bet it would be really nice.

And to me, they look REALLY goofy unless you have a street fighter, motard, or dualsport. But hey, style is subjective.

The icon is not that bad at commuting speeds. 75 and below, it's fiiine. Noticeable at first, but you get used to it over time. I have about 15000 miles in mine in about a year. It's no different than any other helmet now.

When you're doing 80-90 mph on the fast parts of I-10 between San Antonio and El Paso, you notice it a lot more. When you are being a hooligan at around the triple digit range, yeah, it's kind of a pain. There's certainly no looking about.

Of course this is my experience riding bikes that actually have windshields.

wow. I can't imagine freeway speeds with a bill on my helmet. a smoked visor provides all the sun-protection I need.

Makes sense. Although I'm not a huge fan of Icon, if it's comfortable and safe for commuting...

How's the noise level with airflow?
