Law or misconception? Rear License Plate Lighting

I just got pulled over my Sugar Land PD a few minutes ago. The officer claimed he did pulled me over because my rear license plate needed to have a light on it. He was tailing me for about 3-4 blocks and I was doing the speed limit, finally got tired of him and leaned over in to another lane. (signaling properly and the whole nine yards) I'll admit my license plate it tucked in under the tail but none the less it is visible with two red deflectors on it. Suffice to say I received a verbal warning. Is this a law? or did he just bored?

Here's something to ponder...

The first paragraph of what I posted says that motor vehicles are required to have TWO taillights.
My bike has only one.

What about it being tucked under the tail? I got pulled over for that. It is still visible from 50 ft, just under he tail and at 40 degree angle with the vertical.

yes, you must have plate lights. go to cycle gear and buy some LED license plate studs and wire them in. cheap and work great.

The plate mounting location is vague.
The law says it has to be at the rear of the back and not "obstructed".

Who defines "obstructed"?

The cop. I'm guessing if you were ticketed and fixed it, then went to court with pictures they would probably lower or drop the fine but it's still a pain in the .

I have been stopped for it but not ticketed, so far.

I thought that was an interesting point of information.

My bike has two bulbs in the tail light.

Does yours?

Must have a WHITE light clearly illuminating the plate. No part of the plate can be obstructed. So tucked (like mine) could be considered out of code. It is within the discretion of the officer, in which lies the problem. Some cops are kewl but [most] are [little] dicks.

or maybe your riding style gets you noticed.

i ride thru sugarland pretty much everyday, no probs. "knock on wood"

but my bikes also have the license and insp at the very back, kinda OE

hope the cool license plate placement is worth the hassle.
