I did some quick math at $4 a gallon, and 15K miles a year, if I replaced my CBR for the RX7, factoring gas, oil changes, sparkplugs, tires, chain maintenance, chain replacement, insurance, and tolls, the bike is $140 cheaper a month. That's just my situation. If I had a more fuel efficent car I was intending to replace, then the savings would be less obviously. I can also use a much more fuel efficient bike and save even more. But the reality is, I plan on owning a motorcycle for pleasure, not to save money, but if I do in fact save money then it's gravy.

Oil changes cost me the oil and filter not 40, tires cheaper when you remove the rims yourself and bring it in. Etc etc
I am pro-rating all the basic maintenance on the bike for 3k miles in my example.

You are right though, I miscalculated the oil a little...$12 for oil and $12 for an oil filter = $25 for Kawi OEM stuff (I do it myself), not $40. I also do the tires myself and intend on doing the chain/sprockets myself from here on. BT016s cost $120-135/tire and a decent gold chain + Sunstar sprockets F/R are about $200.

I ride to work because the vehicle i would otherwise drive is the family SUV which is about $85 to fill up... so yea, love to ride, so far from rain or shine, unless its a bad storm & from about 24F to 107F wearing all the gear year round, oh and HiViz. My "weapon" 09 250R Ninja.

You forgot to factor in the apex seals, and the weekly quart of oil.

j/k. I miss my RX-7s.

100 mile round trip daily on the kawi 636 beats driving a pickup with 354,000 miles on it murdering my wallet. $500 monthly for gas alone in that piece!

I'm still going on my ride to work initiative...other then monday when it stormed its off. I have been enjoying it, although its a bit weird riding home in the morning after working a 12hr night shift..it wakes me up pretty quick. Measured my first tank of "commuter" mileage today, 34.62 mpg with a corrected speedo (speedo healer).. Not too bad, I think I can get another mpg or two if I baby it but, I've just been riding it normal like driving a car.

My old school 1000 looks like its gonna be a killer commuter bike...although I feel guilty about putting commuter miles on it and getting rock chips and stuff but....otherwise it would just be sitting in the garage so atleast it's getting ridden.
