Worth the puchase?

i went to check out a 99 zx7r yesterday which was reall well kept, 12000 mi
but i was sad to find out it had been sitting for a year and a half, and looking in the tank there was rust in the tank, and the battery was dead the guy is asking $2500, if it starts would it really be worth it?

looks real good and has an air horn

Factor in how much it will cost for the following and then make a decision.

1) Clean and coat the inside of the tank
2) Clean the carbs
3) Replace the air filter
4) Replace the battery
5) Replace the brake fluid
6) Replace the coolant
7) Replace the tires if needed
8) Spark plugs may be ok, but need to check.

that's a bit low even for my cheap self.

OP, you are probably looking at about 400-600 worth of parts and labor. If you want it, offer the guy 1600-2k and have yourself a nice bike.

If you can get him to lower the price, and then do some of the work yourself, it may not be that bad of a project. I like the '96 and newer ZX-7R's.

I say yes. To remove rust from the tank is easy. Changing all of the fluids is something I would do when buying second hand anyway. The carbs may be fine after the bowels are flushed. The battery is no biggie. I do like those bikes though. They are heavy, but I like the design. Doing the labor myself I wouldn't spend to get it running. That is assuming the there isn't a hidden cause for it sitting for so long. 2k would be a good offer IMO but I could see paying 2500 if it's in good condition

2500 would be on the high side if it had no problems and ran. 1000 tops as it sits.

I need to see how it sound once its fired up. one shop over here qouted me about $600 on the labor for all of it. i once heard i could get rust out of a take by putt gas in there an flushing it, but i just cant see how much rust is in there thats why i considerd professional help. and all i know about carbs is spraying them with carb cleaner.

I paid 2500 for a 2002 fuel injected gsxr1k with 8500 miles... I did have to dump 500 in it to replace plastics though.

Carb rebuild kits ~30-50$x4 = 120-200$
New tires = 200-300$
Clean and seal tank = ~50$ (example)
air filter = ~50$
battery = ~50$
fluids = ~50-100$
plugs = ~25-50$
age old rubber hoses? = ~0-100$

545-900 in parts
600-1000 in labor (never assume an initial quote is the final product of a repair)

~ 1145 - 1900$ to get it anywhere near good and reliable.

All this assuming there are no major issues.

These jobs will 100 dollar you to death, if you are not careful. Unless you are specifically looking for a restoration project for nostalgia sake, there are better later models that will be better bargains.

I see way less money involved to get that bike running if it has just sitting. If it was parked for other issues, that a different story. I would DIY that and and it would be way less than the numbers quoted.

Exactly. $2,500 seems a bit unrealistic, but $1,750-2,000 would be worth it to me if it was clean and problem free other than freshening up.
