friend's 1983 gl650 silverwing interstate. moto guzzi by honda

so i have been tinkering...
my friend has been working on my dr650, doing a lot of cutting and welding and such things that i dont feel like i should mess with...
a couple of months ago we picked up a 1983 honda gl650. this is like a smaller goldwing, sporting the cx500's transverse v twin, beefed up to 650cc's- actually, i think it's something like 670cc's. and it features a big ugly vetter fairing and some bags all over. my friend got a deal on it $650.
the previous owner was an old guy who was in no shape to ride. i think the bike has sat for maybe 5 years, unlike the 1 or 2 he said.
it's been in my friend's storage for a little while, but i took on the task of bringing it back to life- or something...
the battery was completely dead. lots of rust, lots of grime, the bike is a year younger than i am. the starter, i think, is dead, maybe the starter solenoid.
i have stripped much of the interstate from this silverwing. the end goal is to make it like a big cx500ish cafe racer.
pics to follow.

also, i apologize... my garage has forgotten how to be a useful thing in the time that i have not had a working bike in it. the place is trashed, and has been a clutter catcher. i'm working on getting it sorted out again.
i'll update the album as regularly as i can. any milestone pics will get posted in the thread.

those bars came off of my dr250. they look and feel so right on the gl.
the mini ape hangers made this thing such an old lame bike... with the lower dirt bars, the bike feels a lot more like a muscle bike.

also, if you know anyone who is looking for a big ol' vetter fairing please let me know. i have an abomination in my garage that i want to sell off. monies from the fairing go toward new parts and stuff for this bike. i also have the hard bags and the rails that they mount to. the rails also have on them large turn signals. the side bags are in good condition, the top case is kinda ratty.

DUDE! You're awesome.

Seriously, between work, health problems, family stuff, and not being able to work on my own projects in months I was getting a little down.

Seeing my bike get closer to what I think it could be is a real bright spot right now.

I think that will make a sweet cafe bike. I have seen some pics of some and they are nice. Good luck can not wait to see the final product.

How many original miles on that motor? Any progress on getting it running? Any idea what it would take to get it running?

Shaft driven- Are those wheels a permanent fixture can they be swapped with others easily? I'm not fimiliar with how the drive is put together back there.

I've been looking for a project like this one and may be interested.....

I'm unsure of the mileage atm, I think its 40k.
It needs the starter fixed, which my friend is taking care of. The left spark plug boot is slightly too long...??? I think it runs like that but idk for sure. I don't know that the rear would be swappable with much else, maybe other shafties. The wheels are really cool looking though, not comstars.
The shaft drive seems solid..? I have never messed with shaft drive before.
The new batt is a different size from the original. Needs some sort of battery box or holder made.
The cb gas tank would look cool, but the stock tank does the job and has no rust.
There is a fjr 1300 shock on the way. The vetter fairings and bags are for sale.

The cl ad was pulled... idk if the bike is stilll for sale, but it is still in my garage.

Yes, unfortunately I've gotta part with it. Probably won't have time, money and space all at the same time for any projects for 6 months or so.

Matt covered most of your questions, but I'm shooting you a PM with my contact info.
