Probably met there because of the many cars there....so the bike owner thought he drove there and would have to come back...

Sucks to say it, but in this world, a man of his word has a serious disadvantage from scumbags like this.

Dude wasn't scammed, his bike got stolen. Partly his fault for meeting like he did. Many CL sellers want to do this but it has downsides as he found out. Trying to keep people away from his house I guess. When a seller tells me to meet away from their house I say sure but if I buy transaction will happen at your house or no deal. House address and name will match the title or drivers license or no deal.

Also if vehicle is not fully insured I always add comprehensive coverage to it before listing for sale and allowing test rides. Then you don't need to worry as if gets stolen insurance will probably pay you more than your selling price anyway. Comp coverage for a few weeks will be very cheap. Always hold onto the test rider's drivers license and witness the vehicle they drove up in is staying behind. If I see an ad that states test rides only with cash in hand I don't bother, that's BS to me. I won't hand anybody cash before finalizing a sale either.

BS? What's BS about it, that's an asinine thing to say... Cash in hand or no ride, I'm the same way, especially for a street bike that's worth much more then a dirt bike, anyone willing to let someone test drive, or test drive without payment in hand with the understanding you wreck it, you buy it is just asking for trouble. If the buyer don't like it go buy a new bike. I'm not about to have some dumb take my bike and A - Never return, or B - wreck it then proceed to leave me holding the bag, not no, but NO...

I wont hand over cash either. To me cash in hand means I have the cash in MY hand. If that isn't suitable to the seller, I will move on too.

I just don't do large money craigslist deals without another party present, and I recommend the other party do the same before we meet.

Exactly. And if you give cash to the seller do they give you the signed title to hold while test riding? I don't think a random seller can be trusted any more than a random buyer. Could be a stolen bike and the guy meets you in front of somebody house that isn't home. You hand over cash to test ride and come back to an empty driveway and on a stolen bike so double SOL. Could happen.
